Adding a Brake Light to 2017 V9 Roamer
« on: May 09, 2022, 03:57:19 PM »
I have added the separate led light to the lower tail section, below the license, and need to splice into the brake light and running light wires. I assume that is best done near the fuse box, but certainly don't know.

Does anyone know the wire colors for the tail light and brake light?

I saw for an earlier bike ...

Yellow for the tail light and yellow-green for the brake light. Blue for ground. I don't know if it applies to the 2017 Roamer.

And, if anyone has more specific advice, that is welcomed.

Carl's drawing shoes the colours

I would splice into it as close to the existing tail-light as possible, that way you are not chopping into the main loom.

Yes,
Blue or Black for the ground.
Yellow for the running light, there seems to be some confusion V or G?
A wire with yellow stripe for the brake light.

Ever wondered if your brake light is On?
I added an LED to the front stop switch, yellow wire to chassis, it indicates if either brake switch is closed.

I use posi-tap connectors, and connect them on the taillight harness, not the main harness.

You can make the connections to the taillight wires and then use a voltmeter to verify brake versus taillight prior to making the final connections.

Here is my solution using the advice here. It is an LED light and does the flash before steady on thing, so that's a nice trick to add. The light was about $20. I also show a picture of the connections with the original brake light removed just FYI.

Sure. Note that the guide to the wiring is in the ad. It is not in the box when the light arrives. https://www.ebay.com/itm/284673704881
I did have to drill two holes for the bolts attached to the back but that was pretty easy using a cardboard template. The good news is that if I decide that I don't like it, I can follow the other advice that I received and cut that odd triangular section off the tail.

If your bike is like a V7III, there is a plug that connects to the tail/brake light to the switches. I looked around and found a plug that fits the OEM one. I made a jumper with a splice that goes to an ST2 brake light controller (flashes when you decelerate). I'm not keen on the clamp-on connectors that came with the ST2 unit. I have some extra plugs--free if you want one.

This is the jumper I made. Fits between the OEM plugs, so the original wiring is intact.

What a great and generous solution. Mine is soldered and finished, but send me a connector if you have extras and I will probably redo it because I really like to do the best that I can and that usually takes a couple tries.

I don't see a PM link but mine is chatmanx@pacbell.net

Thanks.
