V7 II Swingarm pivot gap / space?

My driveshaft came in the mail today finally. Installed it, and in the process of tightening up the swingarm pivot boats. Having an issue with a lot of air gap. I thought maybe it was due to the rear wheel axle having been tightened, but when I loosened it, I still have a gap. I don’t remember having this much, in fact I thought I had none at all when I installed it after replacing the clutch.

Thought maybe the lock nuts might help as well. Nope.

Anyone have any ideas on how to close the gap?

I wonder if I might be pressing in against the inner race of the swingarm bearings instead of clearing them. Stay tuned.

Most smallblocks, the swingarm is over to one side w/a spacer. Snugs up to one side only. Look in the manual if they still tell you. This carried through to the V7 series bikes.

Appreciate the response, @guzzisteve. I don’t see any instructions on reinstalling, just removal. The only thing I see for tightening is in the torque specs, which isn’t much. No info on starting one place or the other. Not sure how to find when the pin seats other than carefully watching the threads get close enough to the inner race, at which point the gap will slowly expand.

If it’s anything like the V85, then the right hand (throttle) side, has the fitting that screws in and bottoms.
The other side has the threaded piece that winds in to progressively reduce the play, then is secured by the locking collar.

Huzo, both pivot pins are the same part #—Internal hex head > threaded section > skinnier unthreaded section.

The spacer is not numbered but you see it between the #4's, you put in pin w/spacer between swingarm & frame. Screw in pin till it's snug to spacer & frame THEN put pin in other side till snug or just touching, lock pins in place w/nut, done.
The procedure used to be in V7 manual, might have to look in older one like a 2009 V7C.
Guzzi only puts new procedures in manuals, you are supposed to look at older ones to find what you need.
It has nothing to do with V85TT its old stuff.

If you still can't find it,   IT's in the V35, V50,V65 manual or NEVADA, old stuff
You are supposed to know all this stuff

Is there a torque setting for the threaded pins?
I just take up the clearance then give it a touch more as you would a wheel bearing.

No torque just snug, the nuts on pins are 58ftlbs though.

I found the instructions in the most recent Nevada manual. Pic attached. Note that the Nevada’s spacer washer is on the left side; the V7 II’s spacer is on the right side. (I read this wrong)

I’m assuming the gap on the left side is normal, but it’s close to 1/4”.

Also, when the pivot pins seat against the gearbox, i assumed I would feel a noticeable <DINK!> when it hit, but I didn’t feel that. Instead, I just watched for the pin to start pulling the swingarm away from the gearbox. Backed up, stopped, then hopped over to the left side.

Note that it is SO much more convenient to maneuver the swingarm with the bevel box detached. Good lord.

Thanks to guzzisteve for making me realize I clearly need to read through ever small block since the 70s, apparently, lol.

I thought I was in the clear once the clutch was replaced, and the new driveshaft was ordered, but it never got picked up… in California. Had to call and request an overnight shipment on Friday, and was notified by the US Post Office that it would be guaranteed to arrive Saturday by 6pm. Received a notification that it was at the regional hub Saturday at 11am, but it didn’t arrive at my aunt’s until today. A part ordered on Wednesday, and I end up missing 2 days of work. Needless to say, I appreciate my local US post office back home in NH, not so much the one’s down here at my aunt’s or in California.

Well stated guzzisteve. My Breva 750 and V7 MkII both had a spacer on RH ( drive side )  nothing on left pin. Recommend greasing shouldered  pins as mine was rusted into inner BB race 2 years old .Do the drive shaft splines too the factory are not generous with grease. Interested to know why you are replacing the shaft .

Wow, a procedure exists.
It seems the left pin is locked and the right is not.
I just installed one last night and I didn't lock either pins.
Once they bottom out I back out a smigg.

In some ways, the new manual is just a supplement of the original at the beginning of the series.
Some things never change. I just put down how I remember doing the job. Done too many, glad it's over too!!
Last smallblock I owned was 1983 for a short time, maybe a year.

Interested to know why you are replacing the shaft .

During my clutch replacement, I found one of the u-joints was cracked, and the bearings weren’t moving freely.
