Might be rare but I don’t see it as very good looking.

Not a whole lot different than the ‘83 R100 I just got back on the road. Only making about 60 hp, but a very pleasent ride.

Euphemistically referred to as a “styling exercise.” Great platform, but I doubt it will knock any Black Shadows out of contention for collectibility honors.

Brings back great memories of a short but wonderful California rent and ride in 1995.  I was able to combine business (Allen Bradley Trade Show) with multi day motorcycle ride.  Had pre-arranged the Mystic rental through Wolfgang Taft and his rental company, Dubbelju, in San Francisco.  Left my 'business' luggage with Wolfgang, who patiently reviewed and marked up a map for my ride.  Mostly Highway One, inland at Santa Maria to Ventura, then back north thru the Cleveland Nat'l Forest.  Thru Hollister and Gilroy, then stayed in Novato with good friends.
Returned bike to Dubbelju next morning, and flew back to Cleveland Ohio.

Could be wrong, but I recall the Mystic bodywork being made in Japan.  I believe the bike was based nearly 100% on the R100R, pretty much a lower version of the R100GS ........ same engine, tranny, and final drive ratios.  Like the R100R, rear suspension was Monoshock via Paralever.  Very nice ride for a smaller lighter bike.

Here's a couple of bad scans converted to PPT then to JPG.  Forgive the quality.

The old saying goes something like this:  "What's the best xxxxxxx?" The answer is "the last one."  Usually the last model of anything has had years of development and refinement.  The Mystic (and also the Classic) are the last of the airheads and arguably the most refined.

FYI: many will argue the Black Eagle is the best of the Tonti framed California's.  Ditto my LeMans 5 is the best and most refined of the Tonti LeMans.  I know earlier models feel crude and unrefined compared to it.

Well I think it's obvious, the designer certainly needs more exercise, perhaps a complete cardio program !

Something is not right, those are early valve covers on that bike. Later ones are a little more squarish. I have never heard of that model. I have owned a few Airheads. By the way I grew up in Mystic, lol.

Could just be owners choice, I prefer the look of those valve covers to the later units. Just as i prefer the look of the V85TT valve covers to the units on my V7.  I would change them but it's too price for no performance gain...

Valve covers are correct for model year. As 1995 was the last year for the Airhead some models received Retro valve covers.

At the risk of being pedantic the last Airhead BMW was the R80GS Basic, introduced in 1996 and sold though 1998.  It would be rare in the US because they weren’t sold here.  Like the Mystic and others of the last Airheads, it reverted to the early valve cover type.

The Mystic seat looks a little funky, to me a typical German attempt to be cool, and showing only cool and German vehicles doesn’t generally mix.  A friend modified his Mystic beautifully with an earlier R100 solo seat (which is a nice design) and it looked great. However the gearbox was stiff, couldn’t be resolved under warranty so the bike was sold.  I bet it’s still out there somewhere.

Who was the infamous Airhead mechanic in Deephaven(sw Minneapolis)?  Last name Johnson. He worked out of  his house. He massaged my '77 S1000 Daytona. A real deal
