Tip over sensor
« on: June 14, 2022, 06:14:30 AM »
Hi Folks,
If I run my Norge with the tip over sensor disconnected, will a plague of Locusts ensue?. Apart from the obvious safety related issues, does the ECU need to "see" it?.  It's normally open circuit while running anyway as far as I can see.
Thanks,
Alan.

I can almost guarantee you the ecu will need to see continuity through the sensor with the appropriate resistance. It is after all a "safety device" and we are living in the "nanny state world these days" On my Royal Enfield there is an earth wire and the other 2 wires go to the ecu so "it knows"

I know on an older Nevada, if you install in upside down, you will have starting issues......

which is obvious after the fact, that little ball would rather roll downhill than uphill...... for some reason.

I had a 2007 Griso with the Tip Over Sensor, on the two occasions I dropped it at zero speed the sensor prevented it cranking until I hot wired the starter solenoid.
I think the engine shaking must have jolted the sensor back into place.
I never bothered testing the sensor to see if it was normally open or normally closed, I just figured it was a useful gadget to have.
I don't know if the sensor would ever come right all by itself but I somehow doubt it, mine certainly wouldn't crank in the normal fashion immediately after dropping.
-----------------------------
Getting ready for a trip to the Arctic Circle I was investigating the possibility of potential trouble along the way, I found that the wire from the start relay to the solenoid was undersized (looked like 20 AWG), it made the starter solenoid very sluggish to operate so I ran a new 18 AWG wire with a loop near by the battery positive terminal just in case I ever needed to hot wire the starter.
The new upsized wire not only made the starter engage 3x as fast it also allowed me to crank the starter in this instance after dropping it fully loaded waiting for the ferry.
-----------------------------
If you look at the early Griso like mine https://www.thisoldtractor.com/guzzi007/schematics/2006_Griso_1100.gif you will see that the Start Relay is wired from Fuse C direct from the battery, its fairly Startus Interuptus proof.
Just a year later the Norge came out with the weak yellow wire to the Start relay from Fuse B via the ignition switch https://www.thisoldtractor.com/guzzi007/schematics/2007_Norge.gif this was replicated on the Griso 1200. Luigi really made a blunder there.
------------------------------
I can see why you would want to leave the Tip Over Sensor off but perhaps consider re-instating it on the off chance you might drop the bike one day and not be able to reach the kill switch.

The tipover sensor on the CARC bikes is a very simple device, I took mine apart one time when I thought it was giving me trouble (it ended up being something else).

Add in that I don't think the computer is all that advanced in the CARC bikes to see the resistance on this sensor. Take yours apart and check it out, mine even had moving parts and it rattled when you shook it.
