'17-'18 V7III tach failures
« on: July 09, 2022, 11:33:31 AM »
The tach on my '17 V7III Special died, bike started & ran fine, everything worked except turnsignals.

Tried to replace blown fuse, new one blew instantly when contacts touched....key off, what the??? testing showed all connections tight, all wiring fine, when tach unplugged, fuse slipped in & turnsignals worked again.  So, dead short INSIDE the tach. Word on V7 forum is that failed component is a "power diode". I've contacted several companies specializing in speedo/tach rebuilds, none will touch an Italian motorcycle tach. New tach $500.00+ YIKES!!!! Anyone else w/this issue? any solutions? Any word from Piaggio? (LOL). What possible reason for an always hot lead into the tach? (a guess, so the emergency flashers will work w/key off?)  Seems to me that this set up subjects the power diode to all sorts of voltage variances (battery chargers etc.).
Worst comes to worst, I'll try opening the crimp to get into the tach "can" myself. U-tube says a tack remover tool is the hot set-up (instead of a screw driver) But main requirement is "go slow & be patient" we'll see.
Thanks,
Ron

For that kind of money I'd be disassembling the tacho and trying to replace the power diode myself.

the speed sensor (44) connects to the dash (43)
the dash (43) will talk to the gauge over Canbus, I can't imagine there is too much wrong
If you get it open send it to me and I will use my V7III as a guinea pig
