Thanks, McMaster

A couple of small fixes for my T3 that are fun to share, and also give me an opportunity to thank McMaster-Carr, who make all things possible.

1) Wanting a spot light switch a lot closer to my thumb I looked idly at the 8x1.25x10 set screw locating my clutch lever and thought it would be a great mounting spot if only I could get a really long set screw. McMaster had one 25mm long. Problem solved:

2) Having no luck Helicoiling the necessary tiny threads on some test aluminum, I decided to try tapping new threads deeper in the pre-drilled holes that take the screws for my VHB carb top. (One hole was stripped by the PO, while the other one finally let go too.) I cut new threads to a depth of 21 mm, the limit of my tap. Of course McMaster had M4x25mm screws:

Thanks, McMaster!

They have "saved my bacon" on numerous occasions, most recently delivering a pair of front wheel bearings for my Convert one day after I ordered them. Got them installed just in time to go to the Virginia Rally.

Not to mention 100ct bags of clutch pushrod oil seal orings for a very low price. That’s about 19 more clutches than I ever hope to do again.

Yeah, they're great and about 10 miles down the road from me, I can place an order and it is ready for pick up within an hour.  They have a very good website and ordering is easy.

Amen to all those who sing the praises of McMaster-Carr.
McMaster-Carr is a first class organization.  The best website on the internet IMO due to ease of use.

Back when I worked as a tool/machine designer for a company that serviced the comercial Nuclear Steam System (NSS) industry, and a couple other small job shops, McMaster-Carr was OFTEN a go-to source.

In the NSS industry, when the financial penalties for delay of job may be $x,xxx, xxx per day, or $xxx, xxx per hour (2x or 3x what Charlie charges.....), quick reliable, dependable, accurate service is REALLY, REALLY appreciated.

You can save a couple more bucks elsewhere, but for service, quality, consistency, and knowledgeable employees, McMaster-Carr can't be beat.  A similar company is MSC Industrial Supply.

Little known trick, when it is 7pm on Friday on the East Coast, and you need a part by noon the next day, order what you need thru McMaster-Carr's California offices!  Did that more than once.  Saturday morning the part was there without fail!!!

When I worked in the aircraft shop, we used MSC. The boss had an account with them and they had a warehouse in Reno, a hour and a half away. I could order something late in the day and have it the next morning. Usually machine cutting tools.

McMaster-Carr : source of all things useful.
(most recent example: setting up limb risers for my ‘97 Land Rover Discovery for off-road use: they can supply stainless steel cable lanyards in QUARTER inch increments!)
