A few years ago, there were two Panthers that I could have made one out of. Roper talked me out of it.. "you don't want one of those poxy things.."

In the 1960s every Moto magazine had an ad for the 650 Panther for Honda 305 money. Cost to ship to TX was half the cost of the scoot!!

Whilst it was before my biking days, my Grandad had one (or even a couple, over the years) of these.


Like a lot of his generation in England, he never drove a car and only had bikes, family outings with my Grandma and my Dad (when he was a kid) was with a bike/sidecar combination.


My first ever ride on a bike was on the back of his Honda C70 that he bought when he was older and needed something more manageable, plus he gave me an old (piss-pot) helmet for the ride and I wore it on my Bicycle and when playing with friends who all thought it was really 'cool'.

Just an old school bike mirror I think, Scout63. It's crap and I prefer bar ends, but my bicycle indicators are there.

A member of my local Classic bike club has one, a Model 100 - the later 120 was bigger but not as good/reliable. They had a half-compression lever for starting and an unusual “weir” system for lubrication. It was the bike that inspired the phrase “fires at every other lamppost”. My Model 19S Norton 600 single shared the same long stroke of the 650cc 120 Panther (120mm). Modern RE singles are nowhere near as long-stroke as these old charmers, mostly used as sidecar tugs back in the day. Surprisingly they were still being made in the early 60s….I still have a copy of the book of the Panther. They also made 350cc singles with vertical cylinders, though these were nowhere near as popular.
