Jackal tank cleaning
« on: October 21, 2022, 03:56:33 PM »
hey guys!

Wow it has been a long time since I have been on this forum. I hope all is well with everyone.

I am in  the process of getting my 2000 Jackal back up and running. In the process of that I am redoing all the fuel lines and filters and what not. Anyway when I pulled the petcock out of the tank it was LOADED with some lovely brown varnish. I want to clean the inside if the tank but not sure what solvents or methods to use. I think I remember that there is a pump inside the tank but I am not real certain of that. I am not sure I remember seeing anything to power such a thing.

Anyways the other thing that I am curious about is the thermistor. MGCycle says that they are either out of them or need to special order them. Is there an aftermarket or other model that I could use?

Thanks for reading my questions and thanks in advance for any help you all can provide.

Thanks! -Mike

You might think it's wild but I have used a pressure washer in a tank, take all stuff out & cap. Your fuel pump is behind LH side cover, back next to fender.
You could plug the level sender if you cant get one. Fuel petcock can be replaced with a manual one MG sells

Welcome back Mike

As Steve says, the fuel pump is external. As far as I know, there is no aftermarket replacement for the thermistor. I've successfully used gravel, (!) chain, and drywall screws and solvent to clean a tank.  There's noting in there to hurt once you remove the thermistor and fuel tap. Go for it..

Nice! Thanks guys!

I may try to just clean the existing thermistor and see if it works ok. I don’t remember it ever not working. It is just super gummed up right now. And I did order one through MG, just don’t know if it will ever come through. I did also order the manual petcock(which is what I had on there before).

As always thanks for your guys help! I am sure I will have lots of questions as I go.

Hmmm more thoughts, when you guys have cleaned them out using various methods to agitate the i side if the tank did you also use any solvent? Vinegar? Etc?

I have been toying with the idea of filling with startron-starbrite, then evaporust. I just want to get a process down that will give me the best chance at success.

I just cleaned my tank 6 weeks ago. KBS coatings kit is what I used. 3 part thing.  The final part is a coating which you don’t have to use.  I recommend their cleaner and zinc prep. They sell each part individually.

And don’t use small nuts and bolts to agitate. Some got stuck in there and was a major pain to get out. Use a length of chain. The coating is hard as a rock btw

Thanks for posting this. The KBS 3 step system seems like a good product.

I’m very happy with results.  Use rubber plugs on the openings. They say duct tape works... it doesn’t, I tried

Is there a method to taking off this flange?

I pulled thebscrews but it is not letting go. Is there something else needed to take it off?

Nothing else come off, just keep doing what seems best. I used screwdriver and spray lube. Not the best but it got the job done.
