Mike Tiberio has passed
« on: November 15, 2022, 07:30:01 PM »
Guzzi racer extraordinaire Mike Tiberio has passed. His daughter Robin posted this on Facebook:

Robin Tiberio

After a hard-fought, year-long battle with cancer, my dad, Michael Tiberio, finally lost the war this past weekend.
To say we are devastated is an understatement. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing my Dad knows he was an absolute force. And as a self-proclaimed Daddy’s Girl, he was the center of my world.

He was also a lot of other things. A fearless badass who tore 135 miles per hour down racetracks as his fun. Incredibly intelligent and wise. Fiercely dedicated to his loved ones. A hilarious, quirky, practical jokester. A live life loud and leave nothing on the table type of guy. It’s remarkable to reflect on how much life he truly lived in his 68 years.

I could go on for days and still not do any justice to the man my Dad was and how much he meant to me. I am so grateful for the time we did have together - he taught me how to be brave, carve a place for myself in this world, not take everything too seriously, and cherish the things that really matter. If I stick to those lessons as we go into the future without him, I know I’ll make him proud and be okay.

PS: For anyone who would like to attend or send flowers/condolences, we will be holding a service in early December. More info to come

That leaves a hole in my heart.

I always watched in admiration from afar, as Mike obviously marched to his own drummer, and pushed the limits every step of his journey.

Wishing him a smooth run home.

Over and above his on track exploits, the new (to me) information about his dedication to family only takes him higher.

Ouch.

Sending my deepest condolences to family and friends. I spoke with Mike a few times while negotiating buying his wonderful eldo-vert. He was an absolute gem of a human. The motorcycle I bought from him speaks volumes about the man, some of the most intelligent modifications I've come across on any guzzi, just so well executed and thoughtful. I knew it was a perfect motorcycle the moment I pulled it out of the truck.

I have thought of him often while riding over the past year and really hoped that he might be beating his illness, in some way he will always be there in my thoughts whenever I ride the bike.

We'll do some kind of ceremony for him involving the bike over the coming days here in England.

Rest in peace Mike the bike

Unfortunately, I missed that trip to Bonneville with Mike. I was on a long planned Walleye fishing trip with The Kid and The Grandkid. It would have been awesome.

Dang. I first learned of Mike while I was still in the Air Force in Japan in the mid 90's. Someone gave me either a Rider or Biker magazine with an article by Mike regarding a completely leverless convert. The magazine writer seemed impressed that since the Convert had linked brakes there was no need for a brake lever and since Mike kept the Convert in High gear he removed the "clutch" lever too.

Never got to meet him in person but we have exchanged many PM's over the years.

Condolences to those close,

Only met Mike once, at a truckstop halfway to DC where he sold me an MG Robin moped. Really nice guy, knew these bikes inside and out; his records and race results spoke to that. His unconventional thinking and solutions were a big asset to the community and I hate to see he's gone. Peace and comfort to the family, I'm sure it's an even greater loss to them.

There was a lot to love about Mike! His impact is eloquently summarized by his daughter in her announcement. He definitely lived large. There was one time that I recall that still makes me smile. At one of the MD / DC Sunday breakfast meet-ups there was a fairly large gathering of members milling around in the diner parking lot enjoying a warm Fall day kicking tires. As we were about to head inside Mike wheels into the parking lot on the ever evolving Vert, takes off his helmet and states nonchalantly:
" Sorry I'm late, got a ticket, 90 in a 45. Now I'm hungry, let's eat." What a cat!
