Suzuki Guru
« on: November 16, 2022, 06:08:58 PM »
Does anyone here know any other person that happens to be a Suzuki technical guru?  I have a 2013 650 V-Strom with a very unique computer issue.  Doesn't stop me using the bike, just a nagging nuisance.  Lots of Internet forums and chats.  None of the recommended solutions solve this issue.  Desperately casting straws.

Other than the normal suggestions of internet sites, Stromtroopers.com, etc. I would try to contact Suzuki directly.  If it is a computer issue, I would not limit myself to contacting any specific "Suzuki technical guru."  I'd look for any computer guru, or automotive guru who would be willing to respond.

Could you describe the problem?  Maybe it is not specific to Suzuki.

It never hurts to provide as much information as you can when seeking a solution.

Not sure what your issue is, but as a former owner of a big 1st gen Strom, Stormtroopers site, was my go to resource, a close second was Advrider.

I solved my rough low speed fueling on it with a Power Commander.

I don't want to waste anyone's Guzzi time.  So, if not interested just hit your back button.

2013 650 VStrom, 95000 miles.  This issue has been ongoing without resolution for probably the last 50000 miles.  The bike starts, idles, runs and performs without issue otherwise.

Cruise at speed.  Decelerate with engine braking.  As the tach gradually reduces down through 3700 rpm, the red "FI" fuel injection light ignites and an FI symbol replaces the lcd odometer reading.  Situation remains that way until you hit the kill switch or turn off the key.  Upon restart, the error is gone and doesn't recur until you again utilize engine braking down through 3700rpm.  Placing the computer in dealer mode reports an error code of "C-65".  Books suggest that code refers to idle setting out of spec.  But we're not at idle, we're slowing down off of a freeway!  It happens repeatedly and reliably every time.  Quick shift to stay below 3700 and you will never get the light (including engine brake use).  Cruise all day at higher speed/rpm and you will never get the light.  Slow down by chopping the throttle AND pulling the clutch so rpm drops instantly and there is no engine braking and you never get the light.

Following various Internet forum advice, we have replaced the clutch electrical switch, the TPS Throttle Position Sensor, the GPS Gear Position Sensor, reset the ISC Idle Speed Control valve, balanced throttle bodies.  None of those have had any effect on the error.  The current solution is black tape over the red indicator light.  :-(  Silly, but I can live with that.  However  you also lose the odometer reading so you no longer have trip/fuel mileage for travel.  That's a PITA.

Hence the search for a Suzuki Guru who might have been confronted by this unique issue in the past.

Please believe me when I say that I mean no disrespect, but 95,000 miles on a 650 VSTROM  ?
Right, a piece of black tape would certainly solve that issue (for me).

Is there a MAP sensor in the control system?  Possible faulty or corroded connector. My $.02

I can't claim any expertise on this problem, but with that mileage, I would expect it could be almost any part in the FI system being worn out.  If I read correctly, the bike runs fine, and the indicator light is the only "indication" of a problem.

With so much body work the V-Strom can be a PITA to work on.  If you had a really good friend with a lower mileage V-Strom, it would be an interesting experiment to install the lower mileage injectors on your bike.

Geez, can't help you...right now, after what you have posted, you're the foremost expert imho.  No hiccups with my '12 wee with 52k except a battery and start/kill sw (installed eastern Beaver headlight relay harness so shouldn't have that preoblem ever again).  Please post progress, if you and others here don't mind, I'm interested.

PS - Stupid question:  Any dealer involvement yet? Maybe service bulletin on the issue.

It just warms my little heart that somebody has 95,000+ miles on one of these !

Here is THE bike in question.  Tasmanian friends leaving my house for a Guatemala trip several years ago.  I've helped and supported them for years.  They've now abandoned the bike to me.  I need to keep a spare bike on hand for occasional visitors.  Currently that is my SPII, but I'd like to sell it off and use this for visitor service.  It is about as exciting as a refrigerator.  But after years of outdoor storage in my back yard, it is also about as dependable and reliable as a refrigerator.  Just hand over the keys.  No explaining idiosyncracies (except for the nuisance red light).  Let it sit for six months.  Hit the starter and it cranks maybe two revolutions before coming to life and settling to a nice idle.

Quick check of the web and SV forums turns up a secondary throttle valve actuator issue that mirrors your symptoms. I would guess that perhaps it tries to open the secondary vavle at 3700 rpm to help lessen engine braking? Not sure, but I would start there and check out the SV forums for more info.
