Warning to YouTube video people

Yesterday, I googled myself regarding my sculpture work after talking with a new professional contact.  Just wanted to see what she was seeing and I Haven’t done it in a few months while I’ve been producing lots of video content.  Different terms were used for several different searches.  One yielded a link to a new site, claiming to be of clean character and content even though it appears to be a blatant rip-off of YouTube…. It’s call Gan Jing World

There was a channel on ganjing created four months ago using my YouTube Carolina Sculpture Studio channel name, YouTube channel avatar and eight of my older YouTube videos…. Not sampled.  Not edited. Just lifted and posted like I had done it, by someone who could now interact with commenting viewers like he/she is me. It looked exactly like my YouTube channel, duplicated on this new ganjing platform.  Not cool.

So I sent an email to ganjing admin, voicing my dissatisfaction and expectation that the channel & videos be removed before someone got who knows what comment responses & advice  from that fake ganjing “me” or someday benefited from any monetization of the stolen videos.  Today, the copyright Dept removed the channel.  Very surprised, but this may only be Round One of a new, never-ending war.

To keep this WG appropriate, I won’t get into my personal btdt experience & perspective on similar things and situations.  I expected my YouTube videos to be used & abused.   That’s why I’m posting them for free vs thinking I could sell them like the old days. I’ve seen friends spend a lot to go down that road.  But I didn’t expect that my online identity would be used & abused along with them.   

I will suggest anyone who has video channels on platforms like YouTube watch for similar misappropriation of their content and online presence.  If you find yourself in a similar situation, good luck.

Consider  yourself lucky.  I had planned years in advance to attend the 100th anniversary at the Guzzi factory.  I booked a room at a cute little B&B within walking distance of the factory.  During the interim delays, the lodging website got hacked and turned into a wonderful porn display.  The property owner was not at all amused.  I eventually attended the delayed event and the lodging was quite convenient and peaceful.

Thanks for the heads up Clint. I set up a channel so that I could post short motorcycle start clips for this forum.  It gets a surprising number of views, about 35k a month. I checked the new site and nothing came up. Part of me wants to dislike the new site as a foreign ripoff of YouTube.  The older free-market me says the competition is fine.

I understand free competition, Ben.  but sometimes it isn’t actually free.  As mentioned above, I don’t want to go where I shouldn’t go with this thread.  Let’s just say that Free market stuff is fine if all are playing with integrity.  If not, all bets are off.  That’s a lesson I learned many years ago.

Looking at ganjing, with the exception of certain non-western content, the majority of videos all show only a handful of views and seem very much like a broad sampling of what’s found on YouTube.  The videos from fred smith aren’t posted under the fred smith channel- they jumbled in with videos from Mr jones and Ms whomever on the same ganjing channel. That means fred smith won’t be responding to commenters about his videos.  And I doubt that a bunch of random folks have decided to form a cooperative channel on some new start-up platform.  Imho Free market folks who already have their own established brand or channel on YouTube probably aren’t going to do that….
