What is this and where does it go?
« on: April 14, 2023, 08:58:49 AM »
Reassembling my rear drive unit and come across this washer or oil seal that needs replacing as the rubber/plastic on its outer is fraying...but I cannot remember where it goes and cannot see it obviously on a parts diagram.  Thanks.

It looks like the shield/seal for a bearing. There is a number and -2RS printed on it. Check your bearings.

The end shaft seal in the picture belongs in the trash as it is worn/torn and no longer useful.

A new end shaft seal will go over a shaft/axle and cover a underlying bearing to protect it from dir and debris while also holding in any fluid that is behind it.

15 or 17? They both point to the same part

If you look at the face of the seal here will be three (3) numbers in it. That is the OD, ID and thickness in millimeters.

FWIW fork seals are just end shaft seals. If you get the dimension off the old ones you can bypass the dealers "fork seals" at 4 or 5X the cost and just order end shaft seals online that are the same thing.

Is the number 6303????? Difficult to see.

Anyway it is a bearing number, and the plastic cover is for sealing closed bearings - like 2RS.

Verify the number and I can tell you from which bearing it comes.

Rolf

You are right that is not an end shaft seal it is the seal that covers a sealed bearing.

To the OP this is not a part you can buy individually it comes as part of the bearing 1RS or 2RS

1RS is sealed one side
2RS is sealed both sides

If it is a 6303 2RS bearing it will measure 17x47x14mm

It's the seal from the rear wheel bearing on the drive side.

Can't think of any reason a final drive would use a bearing with seals. The final drive is filled with oil and sloshes it freely through all the internal bearings.

On the other hand the rear wheel has 2RS bearings installed and there's a chance that seal came from the inboard one of then.

15 is the large bearing oil seal and 17 is a small wire clip that's on the shaft keeping a bush in place...so none of those.

I think you have probably got this right...it's not shown on this parts diagram for the rear wheel below

I still can't see it in this parts diagram though (Fowlers)...am I missing something?  Going on Stein Dinse's website they show photos of each part and again none of them are an oil seal the same as my damaged part.

#17 top drawing.

Ok, so it goes up against that bearing as stated number 17 in the top diagram.  So I need to locate an oil seal that is 17x47x14mm to butt up against that bearing?  Must have come with the bearing when I changed it some years ago...can't remember.  I shall have a google as to where to find something that isn't generally sold separately.  If any of you have an idea where to look I would appreciate it.  Thanks.

This also makes sense of what was said in Guzziology on this matter that a seal and/or gasket required for the bevel drive rebuild is found on the rear wheel parts diagrams from Stein Dinse and the like.  Now, I thought that was referring to a square gasket that mounts the drive unit to the swingarm but clearly wrong as I don't believe a gasket is fitted there...wasn't on mine and I have not found it on any parts diagrams.  Don't really want to shell out £60 for a bearing I don't need...hmmm.

Nope, it's a part of the bearing installed by the manufacturer.

unless i misunderstand you, this part isn't an integral part of the bearing itself, of which someone posted a photo of earlier in the thread, but some kind of seal.  although the bearing in question is already a sealed bearing so I am confused but that might be because I am quite new to MG things.

It is an integral part of the bearing.
2RS meant the bearing had one on each side.

The 6303-2RS bearing has the Guzzi article Number: 92204218 or 200218003.
Used on front and rear wheel for the V50.

Rolf

The 6303-2RS is only used on the drive side of the rear wheel of early small-blocks. The other side of the rear wheel has a 6203-2RS fitted, as does both sides of the front wheel.

That part is the part indicated by the green arrow.
It fell out of the wheel bearing.
It's job is to keep grease in the wheel bearing and keep water out.
It might have fallen out of a previous wheel bearing if yours is intact?

Oh, i see what you mean now...i was thinking it was additional to the bearing, hence my confusion.  just checked the bearing in my rear wheel and yes the drive side shows the exposed ball bearing.  bugger.  any other solution than purchase a new bearing as they're not cheap?  thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

It WAS sealed by the part that you found, When you get a new one it'll be sealed again(full of grease, no need to be greased) the meaning of sealed bearings.

Bearings are inexpensive if bought by number from a bearing supply house. About $10 through Amazon for an SKF quality unit.

O'Reilly Auto 303. Even shows 6303 in the picture:

https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/masterpro-bearing-seal/masterpro-bearing/mpb0/303cc?q=6303+bearing&pos=0

O'Reilly Auto 203:

https://www.oreillyauto.com/search/cross-reference?q=6303%20bearing&partNumber=62032RS&partTypeIds=01484,02623,01486,02821,01483&manufacturers=SKF

Hope this helps,
Tom

The O'reilly bearing also has 5 the letters C-H-I-N-A  on it and lets us know to avoid them if at all possible. Much better to go with a quality name brand bearing like SKF, KOYO, FAG etc. In most instances they are only marginally more expensive and are known quality vs the chineasim bearings that are of unknown quality.
