Need to break this curse
« on: April 25, 2023, 07:43:54 PM »
Two days.  Two simple maintenance tasks.  Or not so simple...

Sunday I had to change the oil and rotate tires on a couple of cars.  I figure a couple of hours.  Oil is a snap.  Car 1 tires rotated in no time.  Car 2 is about done (removing the final wheel) and oooppps, it is seized and the stud snaps.  Some online searches and a trip to the parts store later and I have a new stud and bolt.  Getting the rotor off and removing the broken stud a pain.  Eventually installed and wheels are all back on the car.  All in about 4 hours.

Today I have to do the valves and oil changes on my V85 and V7 III.  I figure a couple of hours. Being a clever fellow I start with the valves.  V7 is a breeze.  V85 requires the tank to be lifted, but still pretty quick.  All done with the valves and I go to bolt the tank down.  Last bolt is one of the ones up front under the ignition.  As I pull the socket wrench up, off pops the 8mm socket.  I don't hear it hit the ground.  I get a flash light.  Busted.  I get another flashlight but cant find it.  I have the bright idea of taking it off the stand and shaking it so the socket will fall out.  It does not.  However, my keys which were on the top box go flying and are no where to be seen.

Deciding to take the pain one step at a time, I find another 8mm socket so I can unbolt the tank, remove fuel line, evap hose, tip over valve, and fuel pump connection.  Naturally the tank is completely full and heavy but its off now.  10 minutes of hunting and I find the socket hiding amongst some cables.  Snag it with a magnet, tank back on, bolted down without incident.  Search entire garage for keys (eventually finding them wedged between the grab bar and rear fender.   At this point I give up on the oil.  All in about 4 hours.

Guess I'll get back to the oil tomorrow.  Wonder if it will be over or under 4 hours???

On the bright side, you didn't break any bolts off in the engine or transmission cases......

We must first pray to Saint Eligius, patron saint of Army mechanics and metalworkers. Failure to do so will result in such mishaps but he will help you recover once you enter mechanic purgatory.

Last weekend it was maintenance weekend for my two running bikes. I started with the V85 which needed an oil change, air filter and general once over. All went well enough though getting to the air filter is a bit of a PITA. On to the V65SP which also has a PITA air filter change. To the oil and I find that the filter is too long - doesn't fit. Crap - must have ordered the wrong one, right?

Wrong. A quick prayer and I immediately received the wisdom and understanding that I had put the small block filter in the V85. Dump that oil in to a clean pan, swap the filters, refill with fresh synthetic and I'm finally good to go.

All in (you guessed it) about 4 hours.

I used to work for a boss who was good at bringing in work. He would say, sure we can do that, it’s easy. Then me and my guys would have to execute, usually involving hurricanes, collisions at sea, etc.  our refrain to the boss became, “nothing is ever easy…”

I've been planning on servicing my V7. It's not yet due so maybe I'll put it off for awhile when I have more time set aside for such mishaps. I did the T120 late last fall, my wife's Jeep a month ago and my pickup a few months ago. So I am good for a bit.

Thank you!  I did the brakes and rotated tires for my daughter today.  Only hitch was a quick trip to youtube to figure out how to put the electrical parking brake into service mode.  Less that 3 hours all in!!!!

Yep, that happened because I wanted to check the o ring…..

Two days ago I put some tools together to build a deck for my partner Ann’s daughter Jade.
I thought I’d replace the blade on the drop saw because I loaned it to a bloke and he totally rooted it…
No worries..
Took the cover off and went to unwind the bolt that goes into the shaft that holds the blade on.
It unwound firmly but felt like it had loctite in the threads.
A quarter of a turn and it twisted off…!..(Left hand thread…)
Idiot !

If you had asked me upfront, I coulda told you those are left hand threads.
