About to sell my '83 SP, looking for pricing advice?
« on: May 08, 2023, 07:51:14 PM »
Hi Folks,

Medical issues force the sale of my beloved SP. I'm going to uncover it and post it in a week or so. But what to price it at? I'm totally out of the loop on Guzzi pricing, not having anticipated the sale until today.  I would appreciate any and all comments. Today, l saw nothing comparable on Craigslist across the USA. Nothing in Canada.

It's in excellent condition. Details and pics below. I'm in Ottawa, Canada.
With the exception of the electronic ignition and alternator, which came with the bike when I bought it, all work was done within the last three years. I've only put on about 950 miles (1500 kms) since completing the work below:
-Repainted last year.
-Completely custom rewired with new main switch, modern fusebox and switchgear.
-Upgrade: Dyna III electronic ignition with Dynatek ignition coils
-Upgrade: Enduralast 450W brushless alternator with Ducati regulator
-Upgrade: Dual Fiam horns with relay
-Carburetors rebuilt
-New clutch plates, new crankshaft seal.
-New fork dampers, fork seals
-New steering head bearings
-New swing arm bearings
-New tires
-New battery last year
-Original Brembo brakes completely rebuilt with SS lines. (Master cylinder kit, pucks, seals, pads.)
-All nuts and bolts zinc replated or replaced with SS.
-Transmission shift drum shimmed, new shaft seals.
-Engine timing chain tensioner replaced proactively with after market upgrade.
There’s a bit more, but I have to check the parts receipts.
- 43,000 miles (70,000 kms) on the odometer.
- I don't have the original large SP fairing or lowers

I’m also including the Haynes “Moto Guzzi V-Twins” manual, printed + electronic copy of factory manual, the latest edition of Guzziology and some other documentation, parts and accessories.
You can see most of the rebuild process in the Builds section of this site, look for Bernie's Budget Beast.

These pics are from last summer, but as I mentioned only about 950 miles ago, on dry paved roads.

Thanks in advance!

I’d say if you got $5,000US for it you’d be doing well Bernie. BringaTrailer gets good visibility but almost always lists no reserve.  It’s a very nice bike with all the right parts.  Good luck.

Thanks! $5,000 US equals $6,700 Canadian, which is considerably more than I would have guessed.  I briefly considered BAT, but their shipping service is only available in the lower 48.

Bernie,
Sorry to hear that you are forced to sell your SP. I sold a similarly upgraded '83 SPNT last year for $3800. It had the full red and white fairings also. Your bike SHOULD brind 5k plus but it's a very small market and to get that kind of price you will need the right exposure, like BAT or the Canadian equivalent. Good luck!
Steve

P.S. yours looks really sharp!

Just traded my V65SP for another bike of equivalent value - about $4000 USD. My bike was in good mechanical shape but a little rough cosmetically. I would say yours is in better condition but $5000 might be a little strong. You could certainly start there and reduce if there's no interest. Good luck!

Agree with Scout63....$4,500-$5,000 would be a good sold price...

I bought an SP a few years back and I think I got about 2 or 2-1/2K for it when I sold it. Like all Guzzi's it took a long time to sell and I don't think the market has gotten stronger or the SP has become more desirable

On here people tend to have rose colored glasses on when comes to valuation of Guzzi's. They'll tell you that's a lot of bike for the money or if they had room or if you were closer, or..... but when it comes to actually spending money they go silent.

While the SP is a great bike, they are not desirable to 99.9999999% of the bike buying public. While I'll likely get flamed having been down that road, I feel the value of the SP is in the $1500 to $1800 range.

I'll  +1 you, here.

When you can buy nice 1998-2004 Californias for $2500 to $3500, it's going to take a really special 1000 SP to exceed that number.   To do so will require the right Guzzisti at the right time.

I have to agree with P14 on this one.  I recently sold my '08 CalVin to a gentleman from Gatineau (across the river from Ottawa) for $5k CDN.

It's a very small market in Canada for used Guzzi's.  My guess would be $2k CDN.

If you can scare up a fairing and lowers maybe $2500.

Good Luck with the sale.

G

My advice?  Be patient.  There's a buyer out there.

Remind me never to try to sell you anything! But seriously, if you Google up the value, one in very good condition lists for $2-3K. One SP, modified to a cafe racer with no fairing, sold on BAT for $5K. So value on an old bike is certainly not an absolute, but very subjective. Most older bikes appreciate at some point, often sell for more as they reach a certain age, so I don't think you can say it's worth less than the newer ones.  If I ever sell my T, I wouldn't expect much help from some of the readers here.

I bought mine back 3 years ago for 3500 with the fairings and Givi bags and trunk. They are great bikes but not to many Guzzi customers who know how to fix stuff and mechanics are few and far between that will work on them.Performance exceeds the new 850s but folks will pay 5 figures for them because of dealers able to work on them.Golden age for used Guzzi buyers.

I don't set the market; I only participate in it. Googling the value or using the sold price of a "modified" bike that sold BAT or seeing what other bikes are listed for on the internet is no real valuation barometer.

I suppose I could slap on G5 side cover badges on it! But it is registered as an SP1000.

So far the feedback numbers are $1,500* - $5000, which is a pretty big range. I realize that a vintage Moto Guzzi is probably not going to sell quickly. Fortunately, I'm not in financial distress. And I've never been one of those people who says: "If I don't get X dollars, I'm keeping it."  The vintage bike market is strange - but it is what it is.  Thanks to all!

Hey Bernie, Thats a beautiful old Guzzi. You have done all the upgrades that I would do, to an old Tonti roundhead. Its comparable to a 76 Convert I have recently been refurbishing, so I would guess you probably have $5K invested in the bike with all the upgrades. "To Me" a fully sorted old Guzzi that is turn key ready to enjoy, like yours "should" be worth $5K.
To a rider that wants the "panache" of an old Guzzi, but doesnt have the skills, and or knowledge to sort one himself, your bike would be a bargain, at $5K. You just have to be patient, and market it to the right buyer, or an impulse buyer, that just falls in love with it.
Good luck with the sale,
Rick.

I agree with Rick, some folks don't have the skills, space or desire to buy a basket case and make a silk purse form a sows ear.

I was in the same boat you're in a few years ago selling a Guzzi, I posted it here and immediately found out everything "wrong" with the bike.

I sold it by "another means" and have been in contact with the buyer over the years and he's been pleased to own his V11 Scura.

You sir, have what looks like a silk purse. keep it running fresh and have patience. It'll make someone a nice vintage ride.

I posted it locally for $3800 just to see what would happen. Sold it the next day to a guy who "Used to have a T3". Lucky me. Basically got my money back for the bike + parts I bought, so I'm very happy.
