V85tt tank suck/blow
« on: September 01, 2023, 02:11:50 PM »
I don't know if this is "normal", so I figured I'd ask.
Got a 2020 V85tt a month ago, put about 3000km on it so far.

I've noticed that during a ride when I stop for gas, there's definitely a sound of air rushing in when I open the gas cap.
Should I be worried about a blocked air vent?
Is this a thing on this year/model?

Thanks.

A not too uncommon problem. Solved by a cannisterectomy or removing the one way check valve. Should be more info available if you search for V85 cannisterectomy. I noticed that my 22 V85 would be hard to start after riding and stopping for a break. Noise when filling and then no starting problems. I just drilled a hole through the check valve. No more hard starting after riding and stopping. Unfortunately the gas tank must come off.

I had the same problem with my 2022 V85 Travel. I removed the guts of the valve and that cured it.

On a related note, filling this bike with fuel is a pain. I have to dribble fuel in there or I'll spew gas all over the tank.
I'd like to modify the inlet area to allow more airflow, but don't know if that's feasible. Anyone else have this problem?

Sorry for the hijack!

OMG SO MUCH!
Seems every other time I fill up I spill gas all over.
Not being able to see how much space is left so I can control the flow is SOOOOO ANNOYING!

Try filling with nozzle in line with bike front to back. Upside down works best

I could be wrong about this, but my understanding is that the EVAP system has a one-way valve, and also some kind of solenoid controlled valve, that is intended to control the venting of the gas tank.

It is normal for this system to maintain a slight vacuum in the tank.  Enough to hear it when you open the gas cap.

Of course, it should only be a slight vacuum.  If the vacuum gets strong enough to effect fueling then you have a problem.

And yes, removing all the EVAP stuff probably does eliminate the slight vacuum, since now the tank just vents directly to the atmosphere and not under the control of a one-way valve or solenoid.  But I don’t think that proves the slight vacuum was itself a “problem.”

I’m not on which bike I had but I removed that plastic restricter so you had a bigger fuel hole which made filling up a lot easier. I’m not sure you can do this on the V85.
