What Did I Do To My Bike? Update
« on: September 06, 2023, 02:45:52 PM »
I have a 2019 V7lll Special. It developed a fork seal leak, but that is another story. Anyway I changed the seal, left side. I put everything back together. Then I checked and adjusted the valves, they were all pretty close but I did them anyway to get them spot on, a little tighter, closer to 4 and 6 rather than 6 and 8. Then I started the bike to warm up the oil before I changed it. I blipped the throttle it started to rev then wouldn't take any throttle. It now won't go above an idle kind of like being in a limp mode. It starts well and idles well but will not rev up. I rechecked the valves just in case something was wrong Everything looks good. There is no check engine light. I am wondering is it is something to do with ABS or Traction Control. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Fortunately I have another bike as I will be going to the Nevada State Campout on Friday.

I doubt a small change in valve setting clearance would cause this problem.

My suggestion would be to check the throttle cable to be sure it didn't get out of position during the fork seal replacement.

Be sure there is sufficient slack adjustment and no tension on the throttle cable at idle.

Throttle cable is good. I only pulled the left fork.

Sounds  like something came unplugged during this process.

Re: traction control/ABS—At least on a V7 II, you can ride without ABS (I’ve pulled my front speed sensor off in the past and was able to ride without the ABS function, cut-off switch mod to come).

If you have a diagnostic tool, I’d check your TPS readings. Or reach under to the throttle body and check your throttle cables—maybe one/both snapped?

I had ‘tis problem on my Stelvio when the throttle linkage came apart. There is alittle cup made of some synthetic which snaps onto a ball. The cup is screwed on the arm that moves when you rev the throttle, take a look when you rev the throttle with the bike off.The solution is a new cup and a tune up after it is back together.I hope that isn’t your problem because the cups are hard to get.

Welp, I got my touring done, officiated at a boat race and got a few things caught up at home. So this morning I tackled the V7. I pulled the battery leads and touched them together. Then I started the engine and let it idle for about 12 minutes or so. It sounded reasonably good, idle a bit low and slightly lumpy. Then at about 13 minutes the rpm jumped up a couple of hundred and it smoothed out. It revs up just fine and actually seems to be a little more perky but that is probably just a figment of my imagination. I haven't jumped on yet. I will do the oil change first and put the oil back in the fork.
Thanks guys for the guidance.

So, after sitting for a spell, it now revs when opening the throttle, whereas before…it wouldn’t? That’s bizarre.

I touched the battery cables together which is supposed to clear the ecu. Let it idle for an extended time so it connect with sensors and relearn. It was suggested by members here that I do that. Worked like a charm. I wasn't looking forward to dragging it to my crappy dealer.

Maybe it's time for an Italian Tune Up, i.e. a WOT run.

Remember too that the rev limiter is an important part of the safety equipment and should be checked on a regular basis.

I ran her pretty hard yesterday just to make sure all is good. She ran great without a single hiccup. After being on the disabled list for a couple of weeks it was good to take her out for a spin even if was to only do errands. I am going to Street Vibrations today in Reno but I will be on the Bonneville, my dedicated highway bike. My MG prefers mountain and back roads as do I. It is great to have her back amongst the living. 😁
