Experience with Chinese exhausts?
« on: October 30, 2023, 01:48:45 PM »
You can find the headers with crossover for under $300 shipped from China for the V85, 2020-2023
I asked if it was compatible with the 2023 Euro5 and was told yes
It had the proper placement for the O2 sensors fwiw

So, anyone buy one of these for any model year V85?
Results?
Anyone but one for a 2023 model?

Thanks,

I have a kit for the E5 bikes that includes the head pipes that I bought with the intention of fitting on my E4 bike. Fit and finish doesn't look bad and is in line with all the other Chinese exhaust kits I've dealt with. I haven't tried installing it yet (I've had it for a year but haven't had the time to deal with it) so I can't say how well it fits. The head pipe shape/radius is different than the OE pipes if that appearance matters to you.

I also have a Chinese E4 mid pipe that I've run for a couple of seasons now. That needed some massaging where the silencer connection is made because there is very little clearance between the L/H passenger foot peg and the exhaust. The OE exhaust actually rubbed on the foot peg bracket so my massaging on this pipe made the fitment better than it originally was.

Quality on these parts is definitely substandard compared to the expensive name brand pipes but not so bad that I'd avoid them. I've used a lot of Chinese manufactured exhaust components on motorcycles and cars over the years with a 95% satisfaction rate.

It does…
The top CLR (radius) should be 110 mm and the lower should be 90 mm.
Then it’ll look good.
Also.
The downward section should be in line with the down tube.
It matters…

I don't know the year splits, so check carefully-

I just installed a Dominator exhaust on my new-to-me BMW GSA. They're made in Poland, the quality was first-rate. Super light, high grade clamps, perfect fit. They list a crossover for up to 2020 but not '21-23. And, the price is *really* right.

Something wistful and amusing, yet poignant.

I’m cheap

I get this. I’ve done both. I have to say I’m happier since I went with my zard exhaust. I don’t think more expensive is full proof. I’ve had mixed results with both cheap and expensive exhaust.

I’ve learned two things, you can make a cheap exhaust work. It doesn’t end up cheaper.

Buy stainless. Even if it’s coated. I had a really nice bassani exhaust on a Harley and it rusted. I was not happy.

Would recommend zard. And honestly if money is a concern and I know I’m gonna catch some heat for this affirm or other payment plans that space things aren’t evil.

Chinese exhaust works they just have worn out fast for me and by the time I buy it a second time I could have bought the better one. Sincerely best wishes whatever you do. I think it would work fine and if your usage isn’t that much it maybe a better option.

Clear as mud?

Thanks Beowulf.

I, like you, have made “off-brand” accessories and mods work but clearly some just aren’t of a good quality.
I do like the process of making my mods work and appreciate paying more when the quality and fit are there.

IF the exhaust is stainless and the welds aren’t horrible or just need touching up then, maybe it’s ok for as long as I seem to own my bikes. Lol

At any rate, I haven’t purchased anything yet and I have the luxury of time.

I have a lightly used dual outlet Zard if anyone wants it.
This one.

Also a stock V85 muffler almost new.
There’s a set of stock headers and cat hanging around as well.

Yes if it will fit/work on a 2023, any idea if it will and what it would take?
Thanks Huzo!

Thanks hauto,
I reached out to Huzo to see what the Zard offering he’s got entails.

Will the Mistral fit a 2023?
Any idea what else is involved if anything since the 2023 is a Euro 5?

Thanks!

Unfortunately in a lot of instances in our global market we probably unknowingly buy rebranded Chinese stuff thinking its made somewhere else. Then there is just because its made in a 2nd or 3rd world country doesn't mean its inferior. We all seen our share of great Italian quality.

I like to buy made in usa products whenever possible, but IMHO, the stuff like machined alloy parts I have seen coming out of China, have improved quite a bit, over the last 3-4 years. I am thinking of things such as adjustable levers, handlebar risers, etc. I have no experience with exhaust components, other than Emgo, which I believe are made in China. Emgo mufflers I have used on Guzzis have been decent quality, and , at a price point that for many "work" for a daily rider.

Avoiding Chinese isn't just about avoiding inferior quality.  Politics are barred here, but there are good reasons to buy Italian or American rather than Chinese.

I have in three of my bikes Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries and they are the best batteries I have had. All made in China. Also Michelin and other well known tire manufacturers make tires in China. I'm not claiming all China stuff is good or the best, but stuff from there runs the spectrum. Everything needs to be assessed on a case by case basis from most every country. I wish it was easier to figure out what is a good part from a not-so-good part. Too many companies have sold out their good name and quality for greater profits.

I think the Chinese company make products to the price point the exporter wants provided the exporter has a Q.C. staff on site.

I have heard from numerous sources they have zero qualms about cutting production corners and stealing designs (intellectual material).
