V85TT OEM TPMS

So today I went for a 300 mile ride on my V85TT. As I was heading home, about 10 miles from my house and just after I hopped on a freeway, I noticed my dash had changed to the TPMS screen and there was a red triangle next to the rear tire indicator with 15 PSI showing. I quickly pulled to the right lane, slowed then stopped in the gravel about 20 feet from the emergency lane, as the rear tire indicator showed 7 PSI. Bummer!! BUt I did have my emergency bag which contains my mini compressor, tire plug tool, and a light so I can see what I'm doing. Upon looking at the rear tire, which was still hissing, I quickly discover it had been punctured by a 3 inch wood screw.  I think no problem, I'll be back on the road in 15 minutes or so with the back tire plugged well enough to get me home. BUt then I discover that I must have forgotten to put my all time favorite tire plug tool back into the emergency bag when I came back from Washington last September. I call my girlfriend who was nice enough to stop at an auto parts store and get a tubeless tire repair kit. She arrived about 45 minutes later, and I quickly plugged the tire and rode home.

I will say that I do like having the OEM TPMS on the V85TT, but the way MG decided to alert the rider when there's a tire problem could have been done a lot better. By the time I finally noticed the screen, the tire pressure was down to 15 PSI, I have no idea how long the screen was indicating a tire problem, as nothing on the dash was flashing to get your attention, unlike that stupid cruise control light does to warn you that the world is about to end because the cruise control is turned on but not engaged. MG logic???

The V85TT has TPMS?

The 2022 V85tt Travel version came with the TPMS. I don’t know if it was included with the 2023 models.

Interesting.  It doesn't have to be accurate, but does need to be reliable.  Set the tire pressure with whatever means you trust, screw it in and that is your new normal PSI.  I am more interested in knowing when I am losing air than what the air pressure is on a given day.

I'm with you on the cruise control light. Is that the oddest thing.

You will get used to it. It drove me nuts for awhile on my 1400 but I got used to it. On my V100 I hardly even notice it.

Interesting.  Wish I had know that when I got the tires changed.  Would like to add TPMS for touring.

AF1 sells the TPMS kit, it's around $300 calibrated I believe, so not cheap, but also not insane for a factory integrated system. It's pretty accurate in my experience.

I ran several set of these type aftermarket TPMS and they were accurate to 1 PSI +/- of my digital gauge. IN fact I still have two sets in the garage. I paid $15 on Amazon a year or so back for them.

After 5000 miles using the shortest rubber valve stems possible (TR412) this is what they looked like:





If you are going to use aftermarket external TPMS with a peckerhead sensor I encourage you to change over to metal valve stems.

I'm using a $30 Amazon unit that has been working fine for the past 2+ years. Is accurate to within a couple PSI and offers good peace of mind for both punctures and me running sealed rims on my V85TT.

de Bly (maker of the V85 Mickey Mouse ears) is selling a tire pressure system. It is V85, E5, specific in that it plugs and plays and connects to the stock V85 harness. It reads out on the dash.  At this time, $105 plus shipping.

That is a smoking deal for a TPMS that displays on the dash.

I don't know if a warning pops up on the dash when the pressure gets low. I haven't experienced low pressure since installed. At start up you have to shuttle thru screens to see it.

You could manually lower the pressure to test it and get back with us on the results.

As soon as you unscrew the sensor from the valve stem it should send a signal showing pressure loss. I’m curious to know if that system will show an alert on the screen letting the rider know there’s a problem, like it does on the OEM tpms.
