03 California Hydro clutch I.D.
« on: May 06, 2024, 12:05:29 PM »
I'm expanding the fleet, traded for two Hydros (03 & 04) over the weekend (all recalls done, as per Piaggio and photographic evidence, 8x10 glossys with numbers and arrows of the valvetrain..😎).  My pondering is that the 03 needs a clutch, and I am curious if it had a single or dual plate clutch still in it.  The ITI odometer is at 16,900 (forever I think too..lol).  I am guessing if it were born a single, it most likely isn't by now with that mileage?
The 04 I test rode, and it is definitely a different sound and feel than my 96 Cali 1100i.

Some people got over 10,000 miles on the single plate clutch. I got about 1,000 miles on mine.

If you look in, or get a photo, in the time hole, it is pretty easy to tell. The old dual plate has the starter ring gear, and the smooth metal 'barrel' that is the flywheel. The single plate has of course a ring gear, but it has openings that expose some of the pressure plates and such.

It looks different looking in timing hole, thin looking not like the big heavy wide look.

+1 internet point for the Arlo Guthrie reference.  I can't add anything to the clutch advice....
