Secret High Mileage Upgrade!
« on: May 17, 2024, 11:50:51 AM »
I have a V100S with about 8,000 miles. Great so far. Any bike will outrun my 66 year old body but...I have installed a secret higher mileage upgrade. The newer bike was a great modification for range but my body is the same. What is the modification, and is it cheap? Is it effective? Does it last a long while? Is it able to work on any bike?

So much for the teasing. What did I do, really. I bought an aluminum water proof canister and a bottle of ADVIL.  stuffed cotton in the bottom and top of the sealed canister with the ADVIL between the cotton so vibrations won't turn the pills into powder. Stick that under the seat and PRESTO. Four hours from home and you FEEL the hours. A quick ADVIL can take the edge off and make riding fun again. The bike feels way better in twenty minutes.

A friend told me about this "secret" and I never thought about it...but on many rides wished I remembered to take an ADVIL (or your favorite aches and pains pill) before I left. Now I don't worry about it anymore. Just take one as your bike and body direct!

I just refill a travel size bottle of Advil that is slightly larger than a tube of Chapstick. Toss in the top case and use as needed. When I refill it I usually do 50/50 ibuprofen /Tylenol. It holds more than the 10 pill that came with it.

One acetaminophen and one ibuprofen before the ride worked for me unless I was taking the Wing, in which case, zero backaches or headaches :thumb:

I hate to be 'that guy' again, BUT recent studies have shown that in addition to kidney damage (I lost 25% because the doctors only talked about liver) ibuprofen very quickly damages the lining in your intestines and can contribute to serious issues like Crohn's disease. :(

I've moved over to Acetaminophen. It is worse for the liver, but your liver will grow back where your kidneys won't.

I've heard aspirin is easier on the organs, but less effective on the pain.  A tradeoff.

I will err on the side of caution but feel the need to pass this info on.
A year ago last march I was diagnosed with stage 3a chronic kidney disease, CKD.
MY Gastroenterologist referred me to a nephrologist.
The kidney specialists gave me three guidelines and advised that if I didn’t want to end up on dialysis, I must follow 3 rules of medical advice.
1- keep my A1C below 7
2- keep my BP below 140/90
3- and do not take Ibuprofen or any form ok NSAID.
I don’t know if this requirement effects any other persons by my research indicates that Ibuprofen is extremely hard on kidneys, period.
That being said, if it works for anyone and that is their meds of choice, it’s their business. I’m not discouraging or encouraging anyone’s choice.

Even if it means that next time we get together it will be for a veggie burger with cauliflower chips, that’ll be good with me Danny.  Take care.

I always thought aspirin was ok, but a web query shows the it's an Nsaid too.  Reportedly Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is not an Nsaid, so it should be "safe" but I bet it has it's own problems.

Anyone have greater knowledge on this issue, i.e. pain and/or inflammation relievers that aren't a threat to your internal organs?

Edit: I did some research.  The 'net indicates;
Aspirin is one of the only Nsaids that aren't a heart risk, but it does have risks for stomach bleeding.
Tylenol (aceteminophen) is a non-Nsaid so it won't harm the heart,  but is a liver risk.
Codeine was mentioned as a pain reliever that doesn't have the above risks, but .... opium derivatives may not be your best choice on a bike.

No medication is without side effects.  The meds interfere with the bodies response to certain stimulus, injury or disease.  In fact, the pharmacological effect(in this case reduction of pain and inflammation) is a side effect, one that we are hoping to get...
There is always a downside to any medication.  If one has specific issues, it is always best to consult your MD and see what he/she says.  As a runner, I have taken NSAID's and have not had any issues BUT everyone is different.  One drug may work fine for one person but not for another person.
And if the med. is only taken once in while, that is a lot different than taken all the time.  If one has to take it often it is best to find out the reason for that pain...

Want to get rid of pain? Get rid of inflammation, increase your Magnesium, & Omega 3’s, decrease Omega 6 ( all corn based products or anything with corn syrup sweeteners, most processed food) and eliminate or drastically decrease your carbohydrate intake, no sugar, and certainly avoid all soda pop especially any diet pop ,with nutra sweet or aspartame. Check your body urine acidity level first thing in the morning  ( pee strips from any drug store) the closer you can get and maintain your acid/ base level to alkaline the less inflammation you have and therefore less pain. A lot of the Chronic diseases and especially cancers thrive in an acidic environment, cancer cells love sugar. Cancer cells have a hard time surviving in an alkaline environment.

About 40 years ago I read a quote from Ely Lilly that went something like There is no drug that doesn’t have side effects.

Prescription drugs do not and never have cured any disease, but you all know this, at best they control symptoms or provide your body with more time to marshal its own natural defenses, if it’s still able to after we’ve knocked it out of balance with toxins, chemicals, drugs or the biggest health destabilizer Stress - Physical,Chemical, or Emotional all 3 or combinations kick in on our (fight/ flight)  sympathetic nervous system rxn over riding our parasympathetic ( health and repair system) restoring and maintaining our Autonomic balance ( mostly Vagus nerve influenced) restores Homeostatic balance, which restores health. It’s been this way since conception, and human existence. But we all want a quick fix, sadly there are none.

Off the podium now.

My quick reading of the study report indicates that the study subjects with damage were those taking the meds DAILY for 3 months or more...
That, to me, does represent usage far in excess of what most, if not all, the riders chipping in on this topic are talking about.

As with everything else we put in our bodies, "moderation" seems to be the key to (relatively) healthy living.

Wow, sorry about all this!

My intent was not to suggest that we do drugs for pain every time you get to the motorcycle, but ONLY when the trip and motorcycle get to you. That's seldom every time you ride I'd hope. Driving hurt can be far more dangerous than an Asprin or (fill-in your choice). When it permits, and it usually does, I just stop awhile and walk it off. But there are those days and I think we all know when we're having one.
