V85TT heat issue with Mistral setup
« on: August 13, 2024, 04:28:47 AM »
"Hello Guzzisti!
I have a questions for those of you having Mistral headers (with cat) on their V85TT E5 (or, for those who might have an idea what could be wrong). I've decided to do this upgrade (together with V-Twin Boost and Exagon exhaust with db killer). I am very satisfied with everything from quality, sound to power delivery.
I haven't any issues with heating coming from the bottom of the bike. After change, I can really feel the difference but in the opposite way. My legs are literally melting if outside temp goes above 86F.
Additionally, I can really smell that 'gas smell' quite significantly after the change to Mistral.
I haven't ridden my bike with OEM headers + exhaust in temperatures above 86F (I did swap few weeks ago and I own the bike since October 2023) but for sure I don't remember the smell. And I am pretty sure that it didn't get that hot either.
Do you have similar experiences?
Thank you in advance!"

Remove the v twin boost. I bet the smell is gone.

The smell is not the biggest issue and I could live with it.
What bothers me more is that heat. Today we had 95F/35C and I felt like there is fire under my hamstrings.
It might be the heat flow coming from engine .. just wondering if anyone of you experienced this issues.
Thanks

I also have big bore headers and a less restrictive muffler on my V85TT ( also de-cat Y-pipe) , and it was also running quit hot on warm days ( not engine temp but heat from the engine or exhaust around my legs )
Only after a remapped the ECU with "beetle map" the "heat problem was totally gone. ( more power, torque , less heat)

The mistral is emision compliant, it has the cat built in, just different design.  The cat burns excess gas which you are adding with the v twin boost which it may or may not need.   I run the upmap and don't notice any extra heat.

The catalytic converter is the source of the heat.  The only real cure is to remove the cat, though I know that's not going to be a real option for anyone in the EU.

You might consider wrapping the exhaust to reduce the heat you feel.

It is my experience that the stock exhaust with CAT and stock muffler have a similar heat experience to the Mistral without the CAT - my current setup.

To cure your current heat situation I recommend going back to the stock setup.  I was very happy with the stock system.  The only reason I changed it to the Mistral system was due to a fit of boredom one winter.    No regrets though, it is a super well made system.
