« on: September 06, 2024, 06:36:41 PM »
Bike ran good thru heavy rain ,parked a couple hours in the sun, when started it ran fine but won’t idle below 2000 rpm.Throtlle seems normal, what’s going on ,what should I do to get it back to 1000?

Did a throttle cable sleeve come out of its “perch”?

When idle speed suddenly climbs, it tend to be one of two things; sticking throttle or a lean condition.

A throttle can be sticking on itself - it barely take any movement to raise the idle 1000 rpm - or the needle or anywhere between the throttle and the throttle grip. Even the grip can stick, but rarely from moment to the next. Usually, you can hear if the throttle pistons are both reaching their stop screw.

Unlikely, but possible, some prankster could have turned a throttle stop screw to have fun on your behalf. Thinking of it, you can check for a sticking throttle by adjusting the throttle stop screws - if both react to adjustment, the throttles are not sticking.

A lean condition can stem from a bolt having slackened off on an intake to a clamp slackening off to a failed seal somewhere. Spraying with WD40 around the intakes (revs will drop) or starting fluid (revs will rise) should quickly reveal any leak.

Throttle cable hanging up. Enrichener (choke) not closing. Timing too advanced.

After the big motorcycle get together, the organizer planned a large ,and knowing him, fast group ride on roads known only to him to a microbrewery to continue the party. My 3 friends and I had a different idea and decided to leave early.I had parked next to a group of bmws so the sabotage theory makes sense as I have no recollection of opening the enrichener on the left carb, which I discovered was still open this morning.Has this ever happened to anybody else? Thanks to all for your wise counsel.

if your rpm seems to hang between gear changes, you may have a gasket air leak at the intake runner between the carb and the head. Shooting  some wd40 or similar at the area when it is idling will tell the story.
