Norge factory fork oil wt & spring rate?
« on: September 27, 2024, 07:20:47 PM »
I hesitate to even start another Norge Fork thread, but there is just nothing conclusive about the factory fork oil or spring rate that I can find. Lots of threads describing what weight oil people change TO, or what springs they change TO, but nothing about the baseline configuration. I am not a fan of just installing a kit, without knowing what my starting point is.

I DO have an e-mail pending @ Hyperpro asking what their kit for the Norge consists of, so maybe they'll be some help...

But in the meantime: My '07 forks are apart and appear to be amazingly simple. My complaints are typical, too much dive, but the damping rates don't seem too bad, and I suppose heavier oil may improve that, but without knowing how the damper was designed it's hard to tell. I think a simple spring upgrade would satisfy me but again, I'd like to know what spring rate I'm starting with.

I don't recall the stock spring rate, but I did the Hyperpro upgrade of springs and oil and it does make a very nice difference in handling.  I don't think you'll be disappointed even w/o the actual specs.  The original weight of fork oil is likely in the owner's manual however...I don't have it nearby at the moment.

Thanks, I guess I should've looked in the owner's manual, but the shop manual says nothing about viscosity, only volume.

Going off memory here….I think there is a 5 weight difference between stock oil viscosity and the Hyperpro oil…with the Hyperpro being heavier (more resistance)…so it’s either 15 wt vs 10 wt…either way you will enjoy it!  Coupled with a good aftermarket rear shock/spring combo and the Norge rides like a sport bike in the curves but still very comfortable for long distance riding.

I forgot to mention that the PO of my Norge installed a different spring, or did SOME kind of rear shock work as identified by several riders at a rally I took it to shortly after I bought it. The rear seems invisible to me, no issues at all, feels great. But those forks sucked from the first time I touched the ft brake when wheeling it to the trailer when I bought it.

There is no common ground for fork oil weight between manufacturers.
If you want to keep the same viscosity oil as oem recommended, using a different manufacturer you need to use a CentiStokes table.

Not infallible, but a damn sight more accurate that going by weight value.
