Europe headlight for Le Mans MK1?
« on: October 08, 2024, 01:01:49 PM »
Does anyone know if a headlight that fits Le Mans original fairing and brackets properly (as on EU/RoW bikes)?

Hoping to find an older one (I'd pay good money for an actual original unit) that is curved, seems the older / originals weren't so flat and so continued in the shape of the fairing.

On a bit of a lighting kick right now, found a set of original europe H4s for my 964...how hard can it be to come across an original europe headlight for a le mans?

I did just discover an H4 bulb that fits the old P45T CEV headlight on my 1000s, so much more light and seems to not be heating up the wires. Got from Susquehanna MS.

Thanks to a tip from Charley, a V50/65 headlight will work though it has chrome trim but it is significantly less money than a Euro LMI headlight if you can find one. One of these days I need to have the trim powder coated.

Oh that's not bad is it. Just found this, I think I'm reading "APRILIA" on this headlight... if anyone has a clue the original headlight part number(s) that could prove very handy...

Powder coating is an option but a self etching primer and automotive quality rattle can like SEM urethane is nearly as durable. At least as durable as the paint on the fairing.

Confirmed in my owner's manual, the original in the rest of the world was an Aprilia unit.

Aprilia part number would be very useful...

The V50 III has a black rim, I'm not sure about the V50 and V50 II.

Depends how keen you are on originality? But when I fitted an LM1 fairing to my LM2, I was struggling to find an original headlight but I had a spare Ducati Monster headlight in the workshop.

It is a little larger so I had to cut the fairing hole bigger to fit and it had a chrome bezel which I powder coated but it turned out nice and I quite like the look of the larger light plus, being a newer design it is likely a better light?

Other than cutting the fairing it all fits nicely.

If you search for 7" headlight on your favourite search engine there are quite a selection indeed.

Do you need a bucket and rim as well?

I see you're in CA, so check if you buy from the UK, we dip to the left !

Thanks all for input - yes beware UK units hah.

I have found a complete unit on eBay france, it's on the way now from Cote D'Azur. For future reference to all, the original part was Aprilia 35964. They're quite pretty lenses!

Shall post pics once it's cleaned up and installed...

Good and lucky find...these parts are rare nowadays and people want silly money as a rule.

As noted, yes, nice find. FWIW, years back Stucchi supplied a repop bezel in black, for the V50III, (maybe V50/II as well, need to check the part number sticker still on it), that they said also was suitable for the Euro 850 LeMans piece. I have never gotten around to try it out. Also I've got an 850 T3 FB with a black short bezel unlike the Elephant nose. It's got me to thinking that might be a possible bolt on replacement. Again, FWIW.

It seems to me Tonti designed the fairing around this highly spherical lamp to continue its curve. Or did DeTomaso work on the bodywork or just the tail light? I might do a bit of restoration on this before I fit it, but maybe not. I've intentionally polished or repainted nothing on this machine to let it show its age. Even those carb caps that love to be shiny.

Oops yes that was a bit messy. Well I couldn't be happier with the result. The front end of the machine is so much prettier as originally designed.

And the "city light" works as intended, with the switch in P position, ignition on or in park position it is illuminated. And glorious H4 light hitting the road.

I am a little late with this but, years ago I fitted an SP headlight ring to my original LM bucket. I like the Euro look better than the US version. I don't think I used the original mounting hardware, if I remember correctly, I used Triumph headlight clips to hold the H4 bulb in place. I have this one if anyone is looking.

Yes one could make a repro of the original by purchasing the APRILIA lens 35964 (with the proper CURVE/SPHERICAL shape) and a reflector that suits, then fitting into the original bucket with this ring.

I also have a spare ring in chrome still though.

Nobody has bought that complete original unit off ebay yet I'm amazed. Not expensive. Maybe as it needs re-chroming and all the rest done to restore?
