2012 Norge running rough
« on: October 12, 2024, 02:18:45 PM »
I bought a 2012 Norge last fall. It had 20,000 miles on it and I've put on 4,000 since then. Started running rough this summer. I'm in Minnesota, so brought it to local dealer Leo's South. They were unable to read service codes with their diagnostic tool because Piaggio doesn't offer updates on their older bikes and Leo's doesn't have the older diagnostic tool needed to read codes

So they replaced the spark plugs and wires and then cleaned the fuel injectors. Still runs rough. Problem appears to be left side cylinder. They pulled valve cover off to check if valve train was broken, but everything looked good. Cylinder compression tested good. They called Piaggio tech support who offered no help. They think it might be a bad sensor causing it to run on one cylinder, but really didn't want to work on it anymore without the proper diagnostic tool.

I've tried checking around dealers in the Midwest, but yet to find anyone with an older diagnostic tool, so I'm wondering whether anyone thinks it's worth pursuing trying to fix it, or just give up on it and part it out? It does have roller tappets.
Thanks for any feedback.

I think a phone call to one of the legacy Guzzi dealers might be in order.

I have a Norge CPU If you’d want to try swapping that but it’s a huge job to get at it. where they mounted it is pretty dumb. (I’m in Bloomington)

Download Guzzidiag first and look for error codes…very easy to do.  Buy the Lonelec cables and you’re set for any future diagnostic….no need for a dealer to read codes.

Thanks for the offer fotoguzzi.
I'm not much of a mechanic and think that would be above my skill level. I'll probably just try and sell it cheap to someone more mechanical then I am.

Sounds like dealer bull , the newer diagnostic stuff reads that bike cause I have used it. It's called PADS and works fine if you have a current dealer subscription. Maybe they refuse to up the subscription every year. Either that or they have oil changers there that are not familiar.
They could have seen flat tappets and decided to move you along, who knows.
You have a model that requires an update to continue to be a good motor. You can search about it under Roller Rockers. Unless they said that had been done, Id dump it. If this has been completed it's worth going to another person in midwest.
Even a non computer guy can check the sensors with a multi meter, we can help here with that. Many know how. Good Luck.

Try swapping the coils.   If the problem transfers to the other cylinder, you've found the problem.   I had the same situation with my 2013 Norge and a new coil fixed the problem.

NWrider,  thanks for the feedback, I'll give that a try.
