New Stelvio/V100 test ride
« on: October 22, 2024, 12:30:55 PM »
Went to a demo day last Sat.  Mostly Aprillia's but a V85, V100, and new Stelvio also available.  As I have a 2022 V85 no need there.
Was looking forward to trying the Stelvio, which I did.  Very nice is all aspects, and in one section I was able to get it WAY over.  Nice and stable.  It was only 68 here (nice after over 100 days of 100 degrees plus!) but I did notice definite heat on both feet.  The V100, which I've had two rides on, all the same except for much less heat on the feet and a rather (for me) tight rider triangle.

I really went to see if I wanted to switch to the Stelvio.   Great bike, but I did not leave with new bike lust.  Both feel much more modern that I'm used to with Guzzi.  That may work, or not.

The 660's and the 200hp "super big whatever" Aprillia's seemed to be a big hit.

I installed these on my V100 Mandello, https://www.mv-motorrad.de/en/mv-footrest-lowering-rider-moto-guzzi-v100-mandello.htm  . I know it only lowers the foot pegs 40mm but it made a world of difference to my bent knees and hips.

I tested the Stelvio over the weekend, and hopefully will do the Mandello this weekend.

Riding around Austin in 90f weather my feet got crazy hot on the Stelvio. Besides that and the lack of airflow compared the the v7 it was ridiculously comfortable.

I've been testing a bunch of super modern bikes recently, and I don't think in really like the feel of "slipper" clutches. Why does everything have them now? I know what they're supposed to do, but I really do feel like clutch engagement feels different on them.

Yep.  The heat would be a deal breaker here in AZ.  It's also why I sold the Norge.  Great for northeast spring and fall, but simply a sauna in the summer.
My V7 and Jackal have zero heat issues.

Was yours a pre-8V? Have a 2011 8V and rode it for 10 years in KS in high as 104 degrees with humidity without any heat issues.

The radiator should be behind the rider.

The catalytic converter should be behind the rider.

If they can't be behind the rider the heat should by routed away from the rider without blocking fresh air to the rider.

The rider annoyed by the heat is subjective just like a rider being annoyed by vibration.

I personally have no interest in going back to liquid cooled bikes.  Especially liquid cooled bikes where the radiator is a prominent aesthetic feature.

I was hoping Moto Guzzi would do an 850 Eldorado or Ambassador.

I also sold my Norge because it was not a great setup for me for TX. Boy was that bike comfy and smooth though.

I think the faring has more of an effect than the radiator. Neither my KLR nor Goldwing has heat issues. The worse bike for heat by far was my air cooled 1984 BMW R100RT. Later I just removed the lower faring when traveling in the summer.

Mine was a 2014.  The cat in the lower front was unbearable for me-but I'm a bit sensitive to that.
Still, it was a deal breaker for an otherwise very nice motorcycle.

Just got back from testing a Mandello S. It's amazing. Same heat on the feet issue as the Stelvio, but I really I enjoyed better airflow than the Stelvio. I found the position very comfortable. My upper body was a lot like it is on my v7, just the slightest lean forward and let's were bent but not bad at all. Could ride it all day I think.

Crazy.  My experience was just the opposite.
back to back rides.  Stelvio was hot-V100 was not.  REALLY wanted to consider the Stelvio-but my V85 is hot enough already.

YEARS of working outside in Buffalo winters have left my feet in a battered condition.  Heat is a big thing for me.  I understand others may not be as sensitive to it.

It's one of the reasons I moved to Phoenix!

I'm actually hoping to move back to Buffalo in five years. These TX summers are getting hotter and the draughts just never end now. I miss four seasons and want to be somewhere where there's abundant water when I get old.

Get ready for unreal taxes and the highest utility rates in the lower 48-and Niagara Falls is RIGHT there, but you'll get no power from it.  You'll use coal power from Quebec.

NY is way down the list of most expensive energy cost states, there are 27 other states that will cost you more.  Don't think I'd sweat it.

What?? First off who needs AC in Buffalo? Maybe a few weeks a year. Just open a window. I  lived in Western NY for 70 years before buying a window unit. No central air here. Get place near one of the Lakes and you will rarely need it. Heat is another story.

Times are changing quick.  Lots of days over 90 now.
And you can look at any chart you want for costs.  I had 200,000 sq of buildings until 2 years ago there.  The guy who bought them is paying almost double what I did.
Rates are going up like crazy in WNY.  I still have property there and it costs an arm and a leg.

Think what you want.  It's expensive.

I agree its expensive. If I hadn’t lived here most all my life I would move. Living costs are lower in all the surrounding states. And maybe even cooler.

OB Guzzi Content: I have put 400 miles on my new V85 in the past two days and the fall colors are spectacular.

Not sure what there is to complain about there. See, TX did this great thing which is a law that says there can never be a state income tax, so instead our property taxes go bonkers.
My 880 sqft house in Austin was taxed at $6800.

For starters, one of the highest state tax rates in the nation.  Second, any income generated in Ny, no matter where the company is based, is taxed.
So, you live in TX and sell on line in NY.  You'll need to file in NY for what the income was.  It goes on and on and on................. ..........

If there is ever a successful revolt in this country it will probably be because of excessive taxation. Come to think of it, isn't this how our country got started in the first place.
