Breva 1100: heated grips install question
« on: November 09, 2024, 01:12:32 PM »
Hi all,

I think heated grips are going to be my top priority for my new Breva 1100 (2007). I'll likely install a fuse block (either a Blue Seas Systems, which I've had really good luck with, or something exotic like a FZ-1, which would be a lot more compact) because there's already a couple of extra items attached to the battery, and I just like how clean fuse blocks are.

The question is about running wire under the tank. On some bikes I've been lucky and can just fish a wire along a frame rail and reach the cockpit that way without removing the tank, but I haven't had luck so far doing that with the Breva, it's pretty tight under there. I've been reading posts about issues with getting the plastic tanks back into place after lifting them, so I'm extremely hesitant to do something irreversible, especially on a bike that I've owned for three days. My BMW had a steel tank and I used to remove it all the time for various reasons, but I have no experience with plastic tanks.

What is the collective wisdom about lifting the tank on these machines?

It is well documented here, but I’ll take you through..
I’ve had my ‘07 Norge tank off 876 times…
Start by removing the seat.

#1
Remove the two small side covers that go from the tank rear to the under seat fairing.

#2
Remove the securing bolt at the rear of the tank.
#3
Obtain a wooden block 4” cubed.
#4
Slide the tank rearwards 2” and lift it up, placing the block under the tank rear.
#5
Disconnect the electrical plug that feeds the fuel pump.
#6
Now, the good bit  From the right side of the bike, hold the 90 degree fuel line elbow with your left hand, GENTLY push the fuel line with the collar, towards the elbow (you will hear a faint “click”).
#7
Holding the elbow with your left hand, simultaneously retract the collar towards the fuel line and slide the fitting away from the elbow. There is a tool you can get to make this easier (and safer).

#8 The tank will now come off…

Don’t dodge around removing the tank, you will have to learn to do it for servicing the airbox and other sundry tasks. It is not the horrible spectre that it’s sometimes made out to be.
