Reserved a Scout EV

After a bunch of research, yesterday I reserved a Scout Traveler. Earliest delivery is 2027-2028. Pretty interesting EV and with the onboard generator (Chevy Volt style) and reasonable styling, I may take the EV plunge as my DD. Will still keep my Tundra for TRUCK stuff, but think this will be a good addition if it comes to market.

Gonna cash in my Tesla Stock to buy it

Reportedly, the Koreans have developed a battery which will provide 500 mile charge in 9 minutes. That will be the vehicle that pulls me in. Particularly if it’s in something like this scout, or the Rivian. Looks like it would have to say Ram or Jeep on it at this point though. We’ll see what the future holds.

Yesterday, we visited some of Dorcia's ex's family. 2 hours there, 2 hours back, and still had 20% charge. Cost? $4.00 in electricity off peak. Had to fill the windshield washer bottle again, though. 51K miles, and this is the third time. Maintenance is killin' me.. On top of that, it's the fastest car I've ever owned including the turbocharged Cleveland powered Mustang I built back in the day. I'm a fan.

This would get me interested. That and having recharging stations as common as gas stations today so you could actually drive them cross country.

JMHO, but, I think you need to switch from Bourbon to Scotch.

With the way I buy bourbon, you just want more for yourself buddy........... Not gonna happen! 

I do like Scotch, but limited. Edradour 10, Oban 14, Glenmorangie Signet.

My next door neighbor and his wife both had Scouts as their daily drivers for over a decade. Her's was a nicer trim level, with V8, automatic and a/c, his was a base model with 4 cyl. and 4 spd. Rust was the only issue I remember either having. I car-pooled with him for the better part of a year, 100 miles a day. Like many vehicles, I believe reliability depended largely on how it was driven and maintained.

I just read Car and Drivers obtained specs and information on the new Scout RV.
With the backup gasoline operated generator, as C and D speculated, giving a 550 mile range, it’s definitely an interesting vehicle.
I could find myself interested in further possibilities of this type of vehicle being in the same garage with my old Jeep TJ🤔

I'm only commenting on friends who owned them and their frequency of having to bring them back to the dealer when new in the early 70's. Evidently the Ford Bronco took a big bight out of their sales, then there was mismanagement and quality issues as the money started to run dry. But like any small manufacturer, there can be problems and a lack of dealerships only added to their issues, and of course this sounds very familiar.

Weren't they also bought by AMC in its later/final years and went kerplunk when AMC died? I always wanted one, but never the right time or situation. I seem to remember them running the same engines and drivetrains.

I like the range extender on board generator for longer trips, but also the full EV for around town, etc etc. This is the FIRST EV that I have even considered. The styling, built in (claimed) ruggedness, and partnership with Rivian all seem to be win-wins. But we will see. I am hoping they will have a display at the Washington Auto Shows this year. Supposedly, with VW as parent company you can get service at VW dealerships, but there is some controversy with VW objecting to the direct sales model.

Interestingly, Jeep is releasing a new EV Cherokee, but it is too space aged. I'm more of a traditionalist and love classic and smooth lines.

This will also help quell my 'car itch'  I almost bought a Miami Blue Macan last week. Love that Color............

VW/Scout have invested billions in Rivian.  VW was having big software issues, Rivian is a power house in the type of software VW needs, and VW in turn  gives Rivian much needed scale to drive their purchasing costs down.   If you look at the Scout next to a Riven RS1 squint just a little, and you won't be able to tell a difference.   Not implying that's anything but a good thing for both companies.

AMC owned Jeep and when they were two steps from the grave Dodge/Chrysler bought AMC and ditched everything except for Jeep. But they did keep the AMC Eagle for awhile if my memory is correct which was way ahead of it's time, think Subaru Outback.

The sad thing about Scout is that if they could have held on for a half dozen years + they could have been in the forefront of the SUV craze.

I owned a 1974 with the AMC straight-6. Of all the trucks I've owned, it was probably my favorite. Convertible and a workhorse! It rusted away, as they all did with exposure to water and salt.





AFAIK AMC never owned Scout, International Harvester just sourced some AMC parts and engines same as they did for the Nissan diesel powered Scout. IH did a good job of incorporating those parts. It was a dead simple truck, but still well refined. I like Broncos a lot but would never own a classic one because I'm too particular about things and it drives me nuts all of the spare Mustang parts that Ford fit to the Bronco like it was a kit truck.

The new Scout is something entirely different from the IH Scout. The Volkswagen Group owns the Scout name now and this is one of their companies. So far there are some design decisions I find questionable, like a power button on the steering wheel, but I can dig it. With them building a plant in South Carolina for production, I hope to see it on the market and hope it does well. I'd have preferred a single cab, but I'm likely not their target market!

Just to muddy the waters, while not a Scout but has an alternate power source, the NameX hydrogen SUV which looks like it might take a run for production.

I think you're right, they missed the craze. I also owned a 1988 AMC Eagle Wagon (a.k.a. a Kenosha Cadillac). It was a blast off-road, between a station wagon and a Jeep XJ Cherokee basically. You'll still find them around in mountain towns where they're very desirable.

No connection to AMC. Powertrains were proprietary (IH) except for the Nissan SD33 (NA) and SD33T (turbo) diesel they briefly used.

They sure did come from the factory with an AMC engine option! The 258cid AMC 4.2L inline-six was called a "Power Thrift Six" in the Scout II models.

That's right.... I do think they ran AMC motors in a couple models, but I could just be remembering a buddy dropping an AMC 360(?) and trans into a late model Scout. I have a buddy who rescues and restores the classic IH Pickup Trucks. His daily Driver is a beautiful beast with the rounded hood (67-68), 4 doors, and modern FI in an otherwise classic and original truck. Looked a bit like this.



My mom had an AMC Eagle Wagon for a couple years. Man wish we held on to it. I was into Muscle Cars (still am) so NO interest in a wagon of any type, especially with fake wood, but it was a cool car.

To clarify, Scout is owned by Volkswagen Group, but is not under the Volkswagen brand. Scout has its own leadership, but gets access to resources and $$$ from the larger Volkswagen Group, similar to how Ducati is set up under Audi under the Volkswagen Group.

Volkswagen bought Navistar. The Scout brand was owned by Navistar from when Navistar was International Harvester. That's how VW got the option to bring back the Scout name. Earlier this year, as mentioned above, VW pumped a bunch of money into Rivian. Along with the lack of removable top I was disappointed in the similarity between the new Scout and the Rivian. I'm hoping a future third truck has the removable top and is less Rivian like

yep.  Series Hybrid / Range Extender Generator seems like a good way to go.  The  new RAMcharger also looksk like a great Series Hybrid.
