Starter Motor Sound - Bosch Vs. Valeo
« on: February 03, 2025, 08:58:53 PM »
Swapping around starters (chinese valeo copy on the lemans took a crap) and I put the Bosch back on my 850T. The old Bosch starters have their own music... it makes the bike feel like you're starting an old biplane.
Anyone know why the Bosch is so noisy?

Some radial engine starters had a high pitched whine, they wound up pretty high before they engaged the engine. I once worked in a radial overhaul shop. Is this the sound you are referring to? I am not familiar with these starters.

The difference could be that the Bosch is direct drive and the Valeo is a gear reduction but I don’t remember

My battery had run down the other day so, after charging I started the bike up to check it was OK.

It was making a weird noise, wouldn't rev well and the charging voltage was only around 10v and then I realised that the starter button had stuck in so the (Bosch) starter motor was running with the engine.

It got very hot but still works, hope it didn't suffer any damage?

Planetary gear reduction in the Valeo makes a different noise.

I was leading up to gear reduction. Chrysler started making gear reduction starters in 1957. They got a lot of flack for the crazy noise they made but they were far superior to anything else from the other two of the big three. I think just about every maker now uses them but have engineered out the noise. One of the radials had a starter with a flywheel that would be wound up before the starter would be engaged with the engine. I don't remember for sure which engines but I think probably the very few Pratt and Whitneys we did. They were very big and to me overly complicated.

The Bosch starter also has electromagnets on the case where the Valeo uses permanent magnets in the case (and tends to draw significantly less
current). When I replaced my old 850 motor with an 1100 motor , the battery wasn't enough to start the new motor , I removed the Valeo from my
Le Mans and installed it on the 1100 motor , without even recharging the battery the 1100 spun over quickly and stated and has continued to do so
ever since . Unfortunately the Valeo starters have become very pricey and hard to get , too bad .

The knock offs seem to be ok from what I read though...If my valeo gives up I'd try one.

The "knockoffs" are just as good, if not better.
