Baby Got Back or, Bikes with Nice Rear Ends
« on: March 11, 2025, 09:10:36 AM »
The latest tail tidy thread made me realize that I, and I’m sure some of you as well, spend a lot of time looking/thinking about the loud and smelly final third of motorcycles. So, let’s have a thread to share bikes whose derrières we find to be quite pleasant to look at or think about.

Lately I’ve been very smitten with the overall looks of the Norton Dominator 99. I think it’s up there in my ideal for a ‘perfect looking bike’ discussion. The rear mudguard stuck out initially as something I wish were a little more typical, but now I’m in love with it. Just enough to make it a little unique:

..Norton Dominator 99.
The seemingly pointless chrome grab rail: used to pull it out of a hedge, when you've realised too late that the drum brakes and relatively heavy weight don't mix well.

Kawasaki Versys and similar "short pipe" examples. Also great for not fouling saddle bags!!

Totally agree on both the Sport 1100 and the 748/916/996/998. Would also add the Aprilia Mille in both the early and 2004 onwards.

 MV F4 in both 750 and 1K.

Out of all the bikes I've owned over the last 40+ years, hands down the one with the nicest view from the rear was my MV Agusta 750 F4.  That under-seat organ pipe exhaust was a work of art, only the Italians could've pulled off something like that.  The rest of the bike was equally as beautiful, and the Dzus fasteners was a nice touch.  My hat's off to Massimo Tamburini for giving us that beauty.

Personally the rear ends I don't care for on street bikes have been all the rage for the last 10 years or so. That is the "butt up high" styling, with the passenger portion of the seat stepped up 8" or so higher than the rider's, with a 10" gap above the rear tire, and exhaust angled 45* up which interferes with the passengers legs and pannier fitting. Here's Honda's new NT1100 which is not even as extreme as many.

Closer to 20 years now: they screwed up the Triumph Sprint ST, when they went from 955->1050. Yup, majorly stepped pillion seat - great (viewing over rider shoulder/head) for showing off when taking a pillion to the local takeaway but not for proper journeys.

I'm biased of course, but I love my Stelvio's rear-end, but only after she went on a diet, and lost about 9kg.
Ditched the original Silencer (7.5kg alone), cut the Pillion Grab-Handles off, and fitted 2004 R1 Titanium Cans . . .

I've yet to see a 'modern' Bike that doesn't look much better with a Tail-Tidy!
Some of the contraptions they bolt on to hold the Reg Plate, Tail-Light, Indicators etc are just ludicrous . . .

Beauty is in the eye, but this baby definitely has back.... DB back to be exact.

These are a bit more flattering.

I’d love to see what that bike looks like without the panniers. Love a naked fender with a solo seat.

Lemans 1000 - Left image is day I picked it up at an auction, photo to the right is me messing with it digitally "photoshopped" if I could get it that way in reality, wide tire (to fill our fender) and lowered - maybe too extreme on the lowering there, but - either way, I think the Lemans 1000 has potential in this contest  :azn:
