Tank liner concern
« on: April 13, 2025, 02:31:46 AM »
I DONT LIKE TANK LINERS, however I have an Eldorado tank in poor condition but still has good chrome knee pads and good loop tanks are becoming like hens teeth to find so I have little option , my concern is with a loop tank the filler has and extension going into the tank and impossible to drain liquid out the filler , secondly the two petcock nipples stand proud inside the tank by 2 to 3 mm , while flushing the tank It is near impossible to remove all liquid without using a leaf blower and leaving a puddle in the tank ,liners being of a thicker soup like consistency  how do you remove it all so as not to leave a puddle in the tank that may not dry ,blowing air may affect the liner and airate it  I will be using either Red Kote or Casswell and Red Kote specifically say do not leave puddles as it may skin over and never set beneath the skin . not sure about Casswell , who has successfully lined a loop tank and how. thanks Ray

In poor condition how?  Rust on the inside? Pinholes?

If it's just rust, clean it out to the bare metal and don't let it sit without fuel in it.  If you do have to let it sit for a while, drain the fuel and slosh some ATF around the inside.

Caswell’s. Always Caswell’s.

Mind you, I don’t have a ton of experience, but the old mechanic who sealed my BMW R80 tank swore by nothing else, and upon discovering its a 2-part epoxy and actually has instructions on how to fix tanks with failed sealers like Red Kote et al, I’m sold.

Also, I don’t know loop frame tanks, so take my words with a heaping grain of salt.

Used to work at a place that used Ospho for rust. No direct dealings with it. Turns the rusty metal black. Viscosity like water.

 Available at many sources.

google Ospho in gas tank.

Here is a quote from a web site 5 years ago.

I sent Ospho an email about this and here is there response.

Quote: Ospho can be used inside a gasoline tank. You want to apply enough of the Ospho to the inside of the tank so that you can ‘slush’ it around. Leave the Ospho in the tank for 30 minutes, slush every 10 minutes, drain tank, Let stand for 24 hours. Then apply a small amount of gasoline to the tank. Slush it around to remove any powdering or residue left behind. After that you can mount your tank and insert gasoline. Ospho will not affect your fuel system or filters.

You used to be able to take/send a tank to an old school radiator shop.  They would clean it out and put some kind of thin but impervious red liner inside.  Did it a couple tanks at Elizabeth Radiator in PA - 412-384-5310.  Don’t know if they still do it, it’s been years.

Did both my T3 and Ural tank with Caswells Dragons Blood. Ural coating is 13 years old. T3 a bit less. No problems with either.
Caswell is a 2 part epoxy and they instruct you to keep hand tumbling the tank until the product sets. That way there is no puddles. Not that puddles are a problem as they solidify into epoxy. The product will fill pinholes and all. Just put tape on the outside of any pin hole to keep the coating inside the tank.

I always did cleanup with a pile of 1" drywall screws in the tank and shake vigorously. I've heard some people wrap the tank in a quilt and throw it in a commercial clothes dryer for 30 minutes. Afterward remove the screws with a magnet, vacuum then blow out the dust then rinse with Acetone and dry. Apply Caswells as per instructions.

They seem to be gone. Google shows Waste Management trash trucks parked on the lot. The liner they used was Red Kote.
