New Yugo 2027
« on: May 13, 2025, 03:53:47 PM »
I'm putting this up because we all own 4 wheels besides the Moto Guzzis.

Back in 1990, I owned both a 1987 Corvette convertible, and a 1987 Yugo. I can tell you the Yugo was a lot slower and more reliable than the Corvette. I remember the Yugo leaked a bit of oil, shook at 70 mph and the gear shifter was made of wood with a plastic cover. I think I bought it used for $1,200 and sold it to some guy sight unseen for $1,000, a few years later. One of the few vehicles I've ever owned that I sold for nearly what I paid for it.  I did not fare so well when I sold the Corvette.

Do the new ones come with a rear window defroster so you can warm your hands while pushing it, like the old ones??

One of the farms I visited used a Yugo to power a milking machine, I don't know how but it took a quart of oil to milk a half a dozen cows. It finally blew up.

I have never owned a Yugo,  But i know it was based on the Fiat 128, and that was a very good car.

No-not a looker, no-not impressively trimmed, no-not a lot of features, but that's what I WANT in a commuter car...

low purchase price, low operational costs, no or low tech,   It doesn't get any better than that...

I hope the new Yugo is on the same plan...   Because Fiat has gone tech stupid.... like most all others
Nothing much better than a Tannat from the Salta region.

Fiat and very good car should never be used in the same sentence.

My father owned a couple of Fiat Spiders back in the day. Always working on them. Can’t really remember them running.

I owned a used ‘Polski Fiat’ station wagon for about 2 months in 91 while I waited for my US spec 91 Honda Accord to be shipped to the UK.

After driving that for 60 days the Accord felt like a Bentley.

Other than just being inexpensive, part of the appeal of the Yugo (and many Fiats) was that that they were so bare bones there wasn't much to go wrong and when it did it was simple to fix, or something you could live without (interior falling apart). Many Yugos went to the scrap yard after the one significant maintenance point, the timing belt, failed from neglect on its interference engine.

All that said, I don't think they'll do well reviving the "Yugo" brand due to the deserved-or-not reputation associated with it. That's bad marketing. You can sell garbage with a name that has a good reputation, you can't sell a great product with a name that has a bad reputation. They'd be better off calling it something else. There might be some nostalgic appeal for it in the EU, but hardly in the USA.

Interesting "Concept Car", but I doubt this will actually come to market, (IMHO)

Sort of like the *NEW" BSA Goldstar (???)

What ever happened to that?

The real name for the company that made Yugos in the 80s was Zastava, and it made Fiats and Fiat derivatives under license for a long time before Fiat (now Stellantis, I guess) bought the Serbian manufacturing capacity.  Yes, old Zastavas are considered classics where they were made, in the former Yugoslavian countries.

The new Goldstar has been on sale in the UK and Europe for quite a while, arriving in US dealers this year. The Ohio Valley BSA Club is raffling off the first one in the US. I saw (and heard) it at the PVR Swapmeet in York, PA back in January.
