Does your mood/attitude go full circle?
« on: August 03, 2025, 11:05:22 AM »
Not sure what the correct description should be, but for periods of my life, I cannot see what all the rush is about. During these periods, I drive/ride gently, do not stress if there traffic goes a bit below the speed limit, and generally lust for relaxed vehicles that allow me to take in the scenery.

Then my mood can change instantly - like during a trip if somebody, usually a German tourist in a caravan, hold up a long line of cars behind them as they slowly make their way along narrow, winding backroads - and I go from tranquility to aggressiveness, passing with abandon and no doubt upsetting or scaring other road users that are half asleep.

For a couple of years, mostly thanks to my Roamer, I have been mostly tranquil, with the odd go-fast moment. But now, I am more and more often envisioning myself on a sportier motorcycle. Which is not so good, since my body isn't up for crashes. Still, there is a joy of strafing apex after apex at a good clip that cuising simply cannot provide.

Anybody else have these changes, altering between  calm & patient and arroused & frantic? Does it influence what motorcycle you take for spin and/or lust for?

You pretty much describe everyone's midlife crisis. And for the older gents "male menopause".
Stay away from soy, tofu....eat a steak ...drink a beer!.....and ride!
And whatever you do....don't listen to my advice! Lol!

My riding has slowed down so much it's become embarrassing.  I used to be able to ride ahead (or at least stay with) of most of my riding buddies back in the day, but no more.  Now I can no longer keep up with them.  They have all gotten a lot better or I've gotten a lot worse.  I'm reminded of what Giacomo Agostini once said when asked about Valentino Rossi's slow slide towards the back of the pack.  "Age matters.  If it didn't, I'd still be racing."

I notice mood swings in my music. Not sure if it's tied to surroundings or cyclical (yeah I'm on the rag  ,) but there are regularly spaced times that I cannot process playing or even listening to my guitar. The notes sound off, even if my digital tuner says they are spot on. Days like that, even my best  guitars sound like shyte. I know better than to try to play or sing with my friends during those days. As far as riding or driving, I'm way more calm than the old days. Retirement has done wonders to reduce my stress levels.

Interesting comparison to music. I do not play anything, and rarely do. But the times I do listen, it is for relaxation. Where I probably differ from most, is the kind of music that relax me; Hatebreed, Terror, Raised Fist and Otep etc. I get really stressed listning to soft music, but easily fall asleep listning to harder stuff.

Once in a while my bike and I are not in sync. It doesn't happen very often but once in a while we are just not working in unison, of course it is me not the bike. Just not with it.

My moods come and go. It's not like I'm normally one way or the other so I don't know what causes them. Sometimes I'm fast, sometimes I'm relaxed. Some days I'll pass to get ahead of the slowpokes, other times I'll pull over and wait a few minutes letting them get far enough ahead they won't slow me through the turns.

How do you know that they are German?

By looking at their numberplate.

I’m not sure on that. I mean, I ride to work on a daily basis. I always split lanes to the front, and when I do, I gas it & clear off. It’s just the way I ride.

I am generally calm but still ride aggressively in the manner described above. Doesn’t matter which bike I’m on….but I don’t own any cruisers. Won’t until I’m too old for a Monster or the Norge. I just don’t see that happening soon.

If feel like I need more than either of those 2 provide, I have a GSXR for when I feel like hearing the wailing shriek of an inline 4 breathing through a Yoshimura pipe. Hard to fault that bike for anything really.

If I were to say, I have every bike I’ve ever absolutely lusted after that would be a lie….but I have the ones I really lusted over for each riding purpose my feeble brain can envision. So really, the only time my “mood” changes is when some idiot does stupid sh!T that is dangerous to me.

Once that happens it’s time for me to go. Not sticking around to see if the accident finds its place to happen. NOTHING is keeping me from getting to my garage as swiftly and safely as my chose ride will carry me. Damn the torpedoes and all that.

It’s kept me from car on bike altercations for most of the last 35 years. Only when I relaxed and didn’t ride like that was I hit by a car. Moral of that story is, ride to live. Don’t relax, it’ll get you wiped out.
