2015 V7i engine swap years?
« on: September 11, 2025, 06:16:25 PM »
I have a 2015 V7i that either needs an engine rebuild or an engine replacement. I'm wondering what years will be a direct swap, no modifications needed? I know 2014/2015 but what about earlier like 2011?

I wish the later engines were a direct swap as I can pick up a 2021 engine for pretty cheap. I'd imagine this would entail a lot of work.

Single or double throttle body would be the issue, specially when it comes to ECU. At one point they changed the drive shaft & ujoints. A few here been swapping motors, they will be here I'm sure. At one point the motor got a wet alternator maybe 13, then it got Hemi instead of Heron bout the same time. Can't remember don't care I retired from the shops. I ride BigBlocks

The 2TB V7 ran until 2011 in the EU and most foreign markets, and 2012 in North America.

The 1TB MKI started then ~2012 in the EU or 2013 North America.

It should be basically the same until the V7II which was a one year model ~2015 EU/2016 NA

The only caveat is there was sorta a MK I.5 in the last year, anywhere around 2015 in North America where the MkI motor changed from the dry alternator to the wet alternator. I have no idea if that changed anything else, but I doubt it changed much of anything. I'd be surprised if the wiring even changed much.

So if you're in the US I would say 2013-15.

Anything earlier might be problematic because of the fuel system differences

Anything later would be V7II which had a different transmission, plus ABS/TC, and minor frame tweaks so there could be wiring and mounting differences.

By 2017 the Hemi Head was introduced and you again have lots of changes.

I'm not saying you couldn't make other things work but 13-15 is closest for plug and play.

The lower frame rails are a big factor to fitting later model motors. Get a set of lower frame rails that match the motor and you might be really close. At the most you’d probably just have to get the rear motor mounts tweaked /welded to match the alignment (Hemi head motors have their transmissions mount a tad lower)

Sounds like 13-15 is my best bet. Of course they don't seem to come up for sale very often so I probably just need to tear my engine down and see why it's knocking/leaving metallic flakes in the oil.  Thanks guys.

Call Hamlin.  Odds are he's done it.  Might have a motor for you, too.

Do you just need a top end rebuild?  The V7, esp. early years, are simple engines, easy for a shop to do.

No, sadly I bought a mint/low mileage V7 and found put after 500 miles of riding that the left big end bearing seems to be failing. At least that is my diagnosis without tearing it down. I do 100% of my own work so I won't be taking it to a shop regardless of which path I choose to take with it.

Have you pulled the cylinder yet to feel the big end play? Have some extra head gaskets on hand to replace, and maybe a base gasket or two. Those jugs are out in the open waiting for your inspection. I’ve never even needed a ring compression tool when slipping the cylinder back over the piston. Just be diligent in cleanliness and procedure.

Thanks, I am on the west side :)

It's non magnetic and goldish/bronze colored so it seems like bearing material to me. The CalVin should be ready soon, parts are en route!

Just checked the rod shells I took out of my 700 motor, they are metallic & stuck to a magnet. Sounds like wrist pin bushings.

I'll break it open to inspect one of these days. Too many bikes in the garage at the monent. Replacing a wrist pin bushing would be a much easier job.
