Whirring noise while riding
« on: October 16, 2025, 04:52:25 PM »
2001 Cal Spec

I hear a whirring noise while riding. Is this normal? I always ride with ear plugs so I don't know if it's always been there or something new. I noticed it today at stops. Sitting on the bike it sounds like a fan running. In the garage, helmet off and an ear plugs out, I'd say it comes from the front of the bike. Alternator? Fuel pump?

Thanks,

I had a BMW once that developed an ever-increasing whine from behind me. Really annoying.   I fixed it by buying a one-way ticket and dropping her off at the airport.  Bike was nice a quiet after that!

Pull the fuel pump fuse while running and see if it stops. How many miles on it.

Could it be a plugged fuel filter, that happened to me once, the filter was plugged forcing the fuel pump to overpressure and become noisy
This was on an EV with outside fuel filter, all I had to do was back flush all the rust out of it and the pump quieted right down.

First thing to do is see if it changes with engine revs or rear wheel revs.

Alternator? especially if you normally wear earplugs.

On the occasions that I go out without earplugs, I'm always convinced there's something wrong with the bike.

Does it still have the electric fuel petcock? It's not uncommon for those to fail, then the fuel pump has to work extra hard and hums loudly.

Noise seems to be constant, I didn't notice it change with revs. It's there at idle.and I can just make it out through my helmet and ear plugs while riding.

I have the manual pet cock.

With the bike off, turn the key and I hear the fuel pump kick on before starting. It doesn't sound like that.

Thanks,

Was about to post the sane. The pump makes a lot of noise to suck open the electric petcock if it is bad.

If it has an electronic petcock, does it 'clunk' open when you turn on the key? Maybe the screen in the tank is getting plugged.
