Measuring straightness of triple tree clamps.

I bought a set of used triple trees from a V7 E5 off eBay to put on my V9 (the V7 E5 triples are the same part number as V7 III triples, btw). Obviously coming from a parted out bike, there’s always the risk that the triples could be damaged due to whatever collision this bike experienced. How do I go about measuring for straightness? Do I have to install the triples, slip in the forks, and measure at various points on the forks, or can I somehow measure for straightness with the triples off the bike?

First, test your tubes for straightness. This can be done by laying the tubes against each other “head to toe” so to speak and see if they touch at all points along their length.
(Head to toe was a cleaner way of describing the juxtapositioning of the forks relative to each other…)

Once you’ve determined that the staunchions are straight, slide them into the lower triple and clamp them with the pinch bolts.
You will be able to sight across one leg and easily determine if it is parallel with the other. The most minute twist in the triple will be easily discernible using this method.
Do the same with the top triple.
