2017 V9 Bobber
« on: March 13, 2026, 07:03:50 PM »
While reading through the owners manual I saw that the Bobber has self cancelling turn signals. I knew the switch gear was different because there are no familiar "clicks" using them.

You haven't noticed it yet? Must be electronic in the dash.

No Steve, hadn't noticed it because I'm pretty habitual about cancelling the blinker. I'm guessing the logic is in the ECU.

Doesn't say anything in service manual about it.
Yes, in ECU then to dash. Maybe it's BS      I don't doubt it.  Is that bad english?

Almost seems like magic can-bus trickery. Is Guzzi electronics that sophisticated?

Cool, I didn't know that about them. Page 39 of the OM.

The turn indicators have a self-cancelling function that implements the following logic.
With the vehicle at standstill (speed = zero), the turn indicators continue flashing in-
definitely.
With the vehicle in motion, the turn signals self-cancel when one the two following
conditions is met:
• After a time (t) = 40 sec.
• After riding 500 m (0.31 mi)
If the vehicle speed reaches zero during this period, the time and distance counts are
reset and start again from zero when the vehicle starts moving once again.
Switching on the opposite side turn indicators without pressing the switch in the in-
termediate reset position causes both the time and distance counters to reset and
recommence from zero.

Sounds like it works on the same logic as the old HD signals (minus the lean angle input).

Time and distance was a Harley thing for a decade or two.

I didn’t notice it on mine either. Guess I developed good habits!…that I’d probably want to stick to, considering none of my other bikes have it.

My 1976 Yamaha XS500 had self-cancelling indicators that used time and distance as a reference. IIRC it was about 20 seconds, do not recall the distance, but probably around 300 yards.

I liked Harley's later system that also used the lean angle sensor to cancel as soon as the bike tipped over to one side and then back upright.

My '17 Harley had a micro switch on the steering stem that cancelled the turn signals. Also my 1400 Audace had the self cancelling feature. I figured it was more of a safety feature as the time and or the distance was too much for it to be a normal self cancelling function.

I must admit that I consider self-cancelling indicators more of a gadget than a useful tool. I remember the system on my XS500 often annoyed me when I passed long strings of cars/lane splitting and had to pay attention to the indicator shutting off so that I could re-apply. My son's MT-07 from 2015 does not have SCI, despite being 40 years younger than my old XS.

My 1979 XS11 and 78 XS 650 have self cancelling TS, along with tipover shut off.  Faffi described the system.

Took me FOREVER to adjust to not having them. I don't recall the MGX-21 having them

The Harley system that used the lean angle really worked well.... The earlier time and distance only system was clumsy and often was too short or too long. But I got to the later more sophisticated one and could basically trust it to match my needs.

Also my 1400 Audace had the self cancelling feature.

Stands to reason as I've read the Bobber uses the same switchgear as the Audace.

I should add that I never tested them on the Audace, way too long. I only stated what was in the manual. I think it was stated that it was for when the rider forgot to turn the blinkers off. It also let me know if my boot was resting unknowingly on the brake pedal.
