Oil leak from bell housing drain saga.
« on: April 11, 2026, 08:42:48 AM »
I would have added this to my previous post about a leak from the bell housing drain on my LM2 I've been chasing for a couple of years, but I just couldn't find it.
A few months ago I carried out my second 'crab' after my first one one was unsuccessful in finding a leak or a cure.
The last one I went to town on, pressurising the crankcases and removing the drain pipe to fully enclose the cam bung with JB Weld.
I was still unable to find a fault, pressurising the cases and using professional leak detector indicated no faults.
A couple of days ago the bike had it's first Spring outing and hurrah, leak is cured.
I can only think that the breather pipe from the breather box going down to rigid pipe in the bell housing was causing the leak as I did it up a lot tighter than it came apart.
So, 2 'crabs' for a 5 minute fix. Check your breather pipes, even it it looks ok, it might not be.

On my V11EV I did all the leak preventative procedures. Found the one way PCV valve in the pipe coming throught the bell housing from the crankcase was sticking closed. Replaced the valve. I also removed the crankcsse vent tube and installed a replacement gasket. I looked closely at the replacement and noticed part of the contact margin was less than 1 mm wide in some places. Certainly not enough to make me feel secure. I remade the gasket to provide maximum margins, then reinstalled with Permatex and proper torque. No further leaks.

Good catch, seen oil run down that pipe from loose clamp on hose too.
