Big seal leak

Pulled my wheel to do my tire and the chunk to lube the splines and not much fluid came out. Looks like my big seal is leaking. Hope the pinion seal isn’t. Big seal id replace. If pinion too might send to Curtis for a going through. 24k miles on unit. Your thoughts ?

That to me looks like someone used a tad too much grease, not a seal leak. Better a bit much than not enough. If it were a seal leak, you would likely see a trail of gear running down from the seal.

When you grease the splines, I only put the grease on the female splines, that way the grease pushes in instead of ending up outside the splines.

The swingarm tube does have a trail of what looks like
Fresh gear oil in it, from the flange to about 5 inch’s in.

Gear oil from the rear drive can get into the swing arm though normally you would not notice it. There is no seal for the rear drive pinion bearing. Again, from the pic, it looks like a bunch of grease was used.

 When the rear wheel starts to leak it will drip oil right on the rim. I just replaced mine last year. Not to hard to do except the previous monkey that had been in there had used glue/sealant on the big round gasket and had to be scraped off.

There is no pinion seal. Rear end lube will splash up into the swingarm. It is only an issue for the shocks are shortened or the bike is overloaded and the lube runs towards to transmission.
There is an o-ring to seal the rear drive to the swingarm.

Clean it up and pack it with new grease. I don't really see a lube leak in the photos. Maybe a bit over greased is all.

Many years ago, there was a trend to add a bit of Power Punch, or some other moly lube, into the front of the swingarm. Typically the owner would pull back the transmission rubber boot to add the lubricant in an effort to keep the U-Joint wet with lube. Adding too much, resulted in what’s shown in the pictures above.

I ‘think’ the practice was mentioned and/or supported by Dave Richardson at Moto International. It always seemed like a good idea to me to keep a bit of lubrication on the u-joint.

Me too! I had them on my last Guzzi just so happens to have the same mufflers on this one. Never seen them before and don’t know the brand   They’re loud but not obnoxious. The sound at 3k cruising is sublime!!!
