Convert Question
« on: August 14, 2026, 10:43:28 AM »
Well, not sure what happen but another Convert found its way into my workshop. This makes two now, both of them are 1976 models. My question concerns the sump on the new arrival. It relocates the filter to the rear outside but the whole sump is one piece. Can anybody give me any history behind this design?

It might be a BUB, they had issues.

Definitely a BUB, I'd replace it with an original one.

Run Forest run!

I had one of my G5 lost oil pressure twice.

Apparently the oil pump on the guzzii engine At that time, it was a 78 G5. Couldn't pump the oil fast enough through the filter through the engine .

Run Forest, run, take it off, put it on the shelf and install a pan  with a spacer, or just run the stock pan setup.

I installed the Harper's Outsider set up and never looked  back.

I now have the Outsider set up on my 76 Convert .

In my case no issues.

You'll be much happier.

Thanks all for the information. I will look into replacing it. I have a Harper's Outsider on my Calvin and really like the ease of changing the filter. The fun thing now is both Converts have the lightweight flywheels. Let the waiting game begin!

Buy a heavy flywheel and set it on a shelf near the Converts. Guaranteed to keep the light ones from failing.

I have been looking for awhile with no success yet. I'm sure one will show up one of these days.

Did the Bub replace the pan and the spacer?

If it did, I have an NOS spacer for a '75 Convert that came with a bunch of NOS parts I bought from an old dealership.

Converts didn't come with a spacer, just the early shallow sump.

That's an aftermarket vented spacer/windage tray. I had one years ago, they are quite heavy.

Thanks, Charlie.
So, this windage try was sold by Guzzi as some sort of aftermarket accessory? What was their purpose on Converts?

Not sold by Guzzi as far as I know. There was once (early '80s) a company called "Arlette", located in Texas IIRC, and that's the only place I've ever seen them for sale. Suspect they were made in Europe.

They weren't only for Converts, but for all Tontis with oil filters. Their purpose was to move the oil lower away from the crank and isolate the crank from the oil.
