DIY trip odo reset knob
« on: September 21, 2026, 11:55:11 AM »
My Bassa was missing its trip odometer reset knob when I bought it. I bought a replacement from MG Cycles, but it must've had a female thread diameter of 3mm rather than the 2.5mm threaded male end on the odometer. Since it wouldn't thread on, I glued that replacement on with 2 part epoxy and it worked. However on a ride that involved 10 or 15 miles of gravel road, it fell off. Strange that it didn't fall off when trying to spin it. So I bought 1/8" o.d. aluminum tubing from the hardware store that fit nicely over the threaded male end on the odo, and superglued on a 2.5mm bolt with a washer to serve as the knob:

It was so cheap to make I made 2. That worked OK, but it was hard to turn with bare fingers (gloves helped). Then it fell off too. Again, while riding, not while turning it. So I bought 1/8" copper tubing and used 3 washers for the knob separated by nuts. Superglued that on during my icefields Parkway trip and it's still there. Easy to turn with the 3 washers as a knob:

Maybe the superglue will hold better on copper. Less oxide than on the AL version.

Is the thread a machine thread or course like a sheet metal screw or wood screw? If its a machine screw thread, verify the thread size and try a standoff nut.
This is a 2.5mm thread.

I don't know which kind of thread it is. My hardware store didn't have 2.5mm standoffs. I looked. You can buy them online, but seems only from China. I can't remember if it should be reverse threaded or not.

Jeff has them at Amazon. If he doesn’t have it, you don’t need it. You can actually get an assortment of different thread sizes for about 10 bucks. My EV is long gone so can’t verify the thread.

If the speedometer is on the left side it's left hand thread. Right side has right hand thread. They're both the same M2.5.

It's been 3-4 years since I have done it but I remember buying a knob from one of the vendors and it broke in two weeks.  I then went to lowes and bought generic lamb knobs.  Then I drilled it out until it was a tight press fit onto whatever is in the speedometer.  Once the drill size was correct I used E6000 adhesive and it has worked ever since.  If someone doesn't know what OEM looks like they would think this is OEM.

Bought one off Amazon a few years back for the EV. Works great, small screw in the center, dab  of blue loctite, works fine, . It shows as unavailable on Amazon now but  its actually an aftermarket HD part--Harley OEM # 67215-89 and 67117-85.

What I recall is that the reset inside is a stud and the knob is the female. Since your gauge is on the left side it's left hand thread, get a piece of 1/4" aluminum rod, drill a 2.05mm hole (or use a #46 drill bit), then use a 2.5mm left hand tap and you're there.

Yeah, that would be the right way to do it. I haven't been able to find 2.5mm left hand thread standoffs, but I have been able to find the tap:

These are available at the hardware store with the bin called lamp parts. I've used them on a couple bikes and as long as you re-tap them to LHT bob's your uncle.  My $.02  Also Michaell32's solution is doable too.
