Nevada 750- No start
« on: October 06, 2026, 09:22:36 PM »
2005 Nevada, been off the road for a few years, sitting in the garage.  Installed a new battery, fresh gas, battery cables cleaned.  Turn the key to On, the dash lights up and does the needle sweep, headlight  on. Pull clutch lever in and hit the starter button-nothing. Not a click , no stutter, zip. Cycled the kick stand up and down a few times, turned the kill switch on and off, checked the fuses, no change. Any suggestions?

the only thing I'm seeing is
Is the neutral light on
I would not expect that you would need to pull clutch lever to start

Do you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key?

Try a voltmeter on that new battery

12.4 plus sitting still, off. At key on?

What does it read when you hit the starter? Shouldn’t drop below 10 I believe. Whack the starter w a rubber mallet?

Did you check the opposite ends of the cables for corrosion?

Was the new battery fully charged for a day? I helped a guy once that put a new one in, drove 5 miles and quit. Didn’t fully charge it

Good luck

Jump the starter directly. If it starts, then it's the relay or wiring to/from it.
Make certain it is in neutral, or better yet have someone else sit on the bike and hold the clutch in.

Jump the starter directly. If it starts, then it's the relay or wiring to/from it.
Make certain it is in neutral, or better yet have someone else sit on the bike and hold the clutch in.

To test the starter, take a length of heavy wire long enough to connect the starter solenoid to the battery positive, crimp a female spade connector to one end & plug that onto the solenoid post, bare the other end & with the ignition off, touch the positive terminal. If the starter kicks over, then the starter & solenoid are OK & the problem is between the starter, ignition & battery. You've then got the starter button in the switchback, the kill switch above it, the ignition switch (wiggle the wires coming out the bottom while keeping the starter button on), the starter relay (it's likely to be a square 4 pin relay - check the contacts & the relay base), & the relevant fuses (measure, test &/or replace). Do make sure you refresh the surfaces of the battery terminals AND the earths/grounds especially.  Corrosion can build while sitting around & interfere with the flow of the grey smoke.

Good luck,

Thanks for the replies. Turns out part of it was a bad pump relay ( thanks michaell32). Swapping the relays around produced some encouraging noises. The fuel pump activated on key 'on', and the starter did spin up when I hit the start button. But I think I need to do the SI fix. Which wire from the starter solenoid do I patch this into?  I can figure out the rest, I did the SI fix on the Breva. And to clarify what I put in the original post, on the Nevada, you have to pull the clutch lever in when starting the bike.

That's another thing easily overlooked - check the operation of the clutch switch - it happened to me, and a mate armed with a multimeter traced it back to the clutch switch - turned out that the switch block had moved around a little (aftermarket handlebars) and was preventing the clutch switch operating. I think you'll find the testing procedure for the switch itself in the workshop manual.

Just in case, you might also check out the neutral switch & it's connector.
