Trip Meter is Done For-Can it be Fixed?
« on: June 09, 2013, 10:17:13 PM »
My white faced trip meter quit last week after being unpredictable about resetting to zero for quite a while.  Most of the time, I just went to the first, even hundred miles I could set it to.  I use it to tell when I need to gas up in conjunction with the low fuel light which I don't fully trust.

Can these things be fixed or is it best just to look for a replacement?

Incidentally, I got a personal best indicated mileage on one tank of 202 miles with maybe a tenth of a gallon left that was usable.  I also ran out of gas on another tank full and literally coasted to a gas pump putting 4.58 gallons in the EV.  Never have I done that but have heard of others who made it by the skin of their teeth.

I did put 3.95 gallons into a 4 gallon toaster tank , and I was in fuel conservation mode for at least 30 miles running through the mountains of South Eastern Oklahoma . Never so glad to see a gas pump .

a $30 Sigma will work for trip metering and be way more accurate than any Guzzi speedo.

Do you mean the kind made for bicycles?

Cutting one open with a cutoff wheel on a dremel tool is easy.  You make the cut in about the middle of the can.  From there you can see if your gears are shot and the unit junk.  To close it back up just use JB weld and a wrap of foil tape.  My Stones was repairable and I even moved the speedo needle to read very accurately, a nice bonus.  I know it was mentioned that some speedos needed a hole to grease them or the gears were toast.  I guess it wouldn't hurt to look.  Mike

What Fotoguzzi said.  I have fitted several Sigma bicycle "computers" to Stones and EVs.  Model BC-1009.  Last one under $30 via e-bay.  Requires front wheel removal to epoxy magnet onto disc hub.  Otherwise, straightforward.  Hour to 90 minute job and very accurate as unit is calibrated to exact circumference of front tire.  Battery lasts 2 years.  Sigma gives speed, total miles (can be set to start at last known miles of the bike whose odometer quit), trip miles, average speed, top speed a, nd time.  Incredible unit for under $30.  I did my first Sigma fitting in summer, 2009.  Still working happily, with one battery change.  Batteries available via e-bay in lots of 5 for about $9.  What's not to like?

E-mail me for photo of disc hub with magnet sender attached next to fork leg pick-up, for proper placement, which is critical.

Yeah, mine just died in the same mode, and I'm going to implement the fix as described by Ralph [krglorioso] above. And when I ran dry and coasted, as referenced in my AZ trip report, the Bassa took 4.707 on the side stand. I wonder what the error of measurement is when the pumps get calibrated.

Could you do a photo shoot and put it up please. My LM2 speedo trip hasn't worked since I bought the bike, so I guess I'll have to go inside at some point, but if I can't fix it I still want to use it for its primary purpose without ruining it.

You will probably find it's just the first digit cog stripped, swap it out with one from the left.

Well, let's see...this generation of pumps reads out digitally to 3 decimal places - there is inherent error in ALL measurement, the trick lies in being aware of the extent of that error and taking it into account - how many drops are there in a gallon?

Oops, thread drift...
