What now II
« on: February 22, 2015, 10:27:36 PM »
2002 California EV.  OK tackled the front end this weekend. Replaced front fork oil, greased the steering head bearings, {still in good shape but dry}replaced wheel bearings, and stuck in a new air filter.  Working on street bikes is so much more of a pain than doing the same thing on a dirt bike.  Don't scratch the paint, don't hurt the chrome, don't pull the wire loose that you can't see much less get too. I need a beer just thinking about it. Anyhow, next weekend I plan on attacking or being attacked by the rear end.  If I go all the way to the swingarm bearings are their any seals or gaskets that I shold have on hand when I stick it back together? Also I saw a thread that said to use the Euro valve clearance specs not the US specs, what's up with that?  More noise with looser specs or what?  Thanks for any info.

My preference is the Euro spec clearance , a bit noisier , but the valves will cool a bit better . Iff you are going to pull the SA , might as well replace the large and small seals in the bevel box , although on second thought , if they aren't leaking ... Might as well grease the UJ , and count the threads on the swing arm spindle on both sides to help recenter the SA .

I would replace the wheel bearings, the seals on those aren't the best or at least have a pair on hand.
Grease the drive shaft and go.

Get a tube of moly grease for the rear drive splines and drive shaft. Buy the small tube at the Honda dealer, I can get it at Pittsburg dealer, Joplin will surely have it. If you take the SA down look at the rubber boot FIRST a picture may come in handy. Quite likely you may not need a new one but if you do this will be your best chance. When you try to reinstall the swingarm, usually after the third or fourth unsuccessful attempt stop and drink the previously mentioned beer. When it goes it will go so easy you will be amazed. Take a good look at the carrier bearing, again this will be your best opportunity to change. That bearing should be available locally let me do some checking or maybe someone will chime in. :PICS!: :PICS!: :PICS!:

Thanks for advice and info.  I'll try it this weekend if its not to cold. Supposed to be highs in the twenties. I might be able to get the garage survivable but the wrenches will be chilled.

I removed swingarm.  I take it that all the transmission oil that ran out when I pulled the rubber boot loose shouldn't be there.  I would assume there is a seal out on the rear of the transmission.  Can it be replaced with tranny on the bike or would that make it too simple?

Something similar happened with my California II, The oil was doing a good job of lubing the universal joint I must say so I just put it back together, that was 2 years ago. Never had to top up the gearbox or drain oil out of the back end so that's the way it's staying. ;-T

On this one there is about a half cup or more tranny oil on my garage floor. It was even leaking out around rightside swingarm bolt.  Think I'll attempt a repair.  I guess the nut on the output shaft must come off to get at the seal.  Manual says to use a special tool, would a rattle gun and socket work to loosen and retighten the nut or would that cause damage somewhere else?  As for Delrod I think its best to stay a little leery of everybody on this forum.

That seal can be changed out without a socket or rattle gun shine a light in there and pluck it out with a mini pick and push a new one in

Received my replacement seal today,  and will do the installation this weekend.  Thanks for the install info.  Didn't Know thickness of seal walls.  As for being leery of members, hope to meet as many locals as possible.  Maybe they'll be leery of me.  All I know is I'm sick of the snow and looking forward to spring.
