Thinking about selling the 1200 Sport - Thoughts?
« on: February 27, 2015, 12:27:37 PM »
I have a red 08 Sport with just over 8K miles on her. She's mint and has color matched Norge hard bags, Mistral CF pipe, Mana bars, adjustable pegs, bar end weights/helmet locks, CG rear tire hugger, new battery and new Michelin Road 4 tires. I really only put on about 5K miles a year as I have another bike. I just got her fully serviced as well. Is $7500 out of the question?

I have the opportunity to buy a black 06 1100 Breva with the reddish brown seat. This one has color matched hard bags (the smaller ones), MG tank bra/bag and MG clear tall windshield. The story goes that he bought it brand new, rode the long way home, dumped it in his driveway, and then it's been sitting in his heated garage ever since. The damage is: scratches on the right side - windshield, lower windshield bolt, bar end, mirror, silver tank trim, engine case cover, brake pedal bent in and scratched frame, passenger peg mount. Otherwise, nothing else. Has 50 miles on the clock.

I'm thinking of selling the Sport and trading down for the 1100. I'm sure I'm going to hear it, so go for it...

This makes sense to me ONLY if you're in dire need of the cash difference.

I recently decided to buy a Breva 1100 or a 1200 Sport and ended up with a 2006 Breva 1100. I searched for several months and from what I experienced $7500 is a little aggressive for todays market. A fellow had a really nice Black Sport on Seattle Craigslist kitted out similar to yours but with a nice Corbin seat and he ended up lowering the price to $6500 and I do not know what the final price was but maybe a little lower, also on St Paul, MN  CL a fellow had a red Sport for sale and he ended up lowering the price to $5500, it was not farkled nice like yours but very clean.

Good luck with the sale.

Slideshow attached to the original post...

Also has a Rich's custom seat and I covered the "chrome" tank covers with 3D vinyl... I know the price is aggressive - All the potential buyer needs to do is negotiate. I may post it over the weekend... maybe... still not sure.

early Breva will be hard to sell over $4500 and your sport is more like $6200+

I don't see the upside? Speaking as a Breva owner.. And have taken steps to make my breva more 'sport like'

Just saw I missed the breva only had 50mi on it

Not sure if that's supposed to be a selling point or not? That's 10 years of sitting

Then again 9k like your sport is nothing to a Guzzi engine

Besides the center stand and maybe.. What... $1000 after you buy, sell, tags etc and put a windscreen on the breva..

Yeah I say no way

Hmmm-  I don't see the upside here. You're going to get hammered on the 1200S- you know that. I bought mine several years back for 6,250. I've put on HBs, mana bars, hugger and engine sorting- but we know that never quite adds to the price. I think you realistically are looking at 6000 ish.  How cheap is the B1100? What are you really goign to walk away with in your pocket? Don't forget that you're going to put money into the breva. At the same time, the buy/sell thing takes a toll.

I've come to really appreciate my 1200 as a great all rounder. The utility factor far outweighs the realistic market value- so i don't see myself selling it.

Oh yeah- don't discount the derision factor. Other 1200S owners here (Molly, Bisbonian, me) will look at you as less of a man for being someone who sold his low production bike just for some filthy lucre. If you decide to take the Breva to the national in NH, I will make sure to hunt you down and strap training wheels on it.

Hey Steven, I was wondering if you were on here! (this is Demian from facebook)

I did craigslist and searchtempest for over a year multiple times a week while I was lusting  for Brevas so I have a pretty good idea of what going prices are. $7500 is pretty fair price considering the tasteful mods you've done to it, especially for an absolutely mint condition Sport 1200 with no history of issues, they are extremely rare bikes since they were only imported for one year and the fairings on them are unobtanium. I saw them go for as much as $8.5k. They didn't sell fast, but they sold eventually. With spring right around the corner and Moto International as support, I can definately see you selling for 7500.

Why do you want to trade down to the Breva 1100 though? The stock MG windshield is rumored to be crap, and the damage you're describing to the bike makes it worth maybe $4k, if that. How is the frame scratched? That's nearly impossible on the Breva... the footpeg/footrest is removable and exchangeable. I do like the black Breva with the red seat, it's especially sexy-looking. BUT.... The 1100s don't hold their value anywhere near as well as the sport does.

What do you possibly hope to gain out of the trade-down? Other than a change of looks.

Well, I've given him the list of things I need to fix, service, tires, taxes, license and tabs. I have him down to $2800. That's the upside. Or downside depending on how you look at it.

Hey Demian!

So the damage is mainly tip over scratches. The brake pedal basically bent in and put a small gouge in the side plate cover - not the frame as stated. That is by far the biggest blemish.

I do think that the black with red seats looks great. Part of it is that over the years, my riding is changing to be less aggressive. I used to trackday and ride sportbikes, but now in my 40s with kids, I'm a much more mellow rider - not quite ready for a Harley though. So I'm not really flogging the 1200 as I would normally. So living around the 4-6k range seems wasteful and suited to the 1100. Don't get me wrong, I do like to test the law still, but not like before.

So it has less to do with $$.

If it's what you want to do, sounds like you stand to make back a good chunk of money and still end up with a great bike.

Every time I'm at Moto International, Dave is always telling me that the Breva 1100 is one of their favorite bikes that Moto Guzzi ever made, a simple and honest bike. You can't argue with that...

Let me know if you start doing GuzziDiag with the Breva, I'll be entirely in the same boat as you and could benefit from it

We all go through times of wanting something different. I recently sold my 1200 Sport and bought a Tiger Sport not a mistake as such but I'm already trying to buy another Guzzi Sport to fill the void in th garage.
I had Breva 1200 before the Sport and I can't really see the point of buying a 1100 Breva the riding position is slightly more upright but the Sport is that bit more special to own, I would think carefully before you make the leap.

I miss everything I've ever sold, and put myself thru the occasional woe is me mode.  Ain't gonna make up your mind for you, but your Sport sure is a looker, and a tipped over Breva.....is just that. Every scratch on it will always remind you of your pristine Sport.

And I agree with the Mayor...the Breva has been, sitting, and waiting, and sitting.....for 9-10 long years.  Then again, if this is keeping you awake at night, and making your coffee sour, perhaps you could scratch up say $2500-2600 cash, and slap that right in his hand. Load it up, take it home, get it back up to snuff, then compare both bikes side by side!   Keep the one that keeps you awake all night and makes coffee seem like a mere consideration as you gear up for another ride. :bike

Luck on your decision. I bought two guzzis last year cuz I couldn't decide which I'd rather have more of.......then winter set in,so haven't even really gotten to try them out.....still waiting  ;-T

I've covered my Breva's jugs so she wouldn't hear all this disrespectful talk.  I would not make the trade the OP asked about unless there was serious $$ involved and needed.  The only positive I could imagine is if I worked on my engine and wanted the simpler 2V or was scared off by all the 4v failures chatted about here and elsewhere.

Uh-oh....never having owned either,  I can't speak for them......But they are both superb motobikes!  Missed out on an early model Breva years ago .....I thought on it one day too long...poof....gone .  I miss that one too! :wife:

Rode another at a Guzzi dealer in Connecticut, against an early Norge...preferred the Breva. Couldn't really afford either at the time.

Great machines all!!!

I'd take the B11 in a heartbeat.  One of the best touring bikes I ever owned.  I had bar risers and the touring screen with a laminar lip.  More like a Norge w/o all the plastic.  I did my first Iron Butt event on that bike.  I wasn't even breathing hard afterward.  (Damn, I'm talking myself into another B11.  :wife:)

The 1200 Sport, for all of its great traits, seems to be the Rodney Dangerfield of Moto Guzzis. It just doesn’t get any respect.  Approx 85 were brought in for 2008.

But I like to think of mine as the “Ugly Gosling” (Duckling) because we know how that story ends.

My 2 cents.

Keep the 1200 sport unless you need the cash.

You can convert it to a b11.. so why would you give up flexibility?

The 1200 sport is also a newer motor.

IMHO its a trade down.. nothing wrong with that if that's what you want and makes you happy for whatever reason..
But if its just to try something different.. keep the 1200 sport.

I don't know if Sports will ever appreciate (or at least stabilize) but they are certainly getting sought-after. I wish I could buy yours; I think as described $7500 is a fair price (now actually getting that  ;D...)

I bought a used B-11 with factory screen and bags because I couldn't stretch to a Sport at the time, and a few other reasonable reasons, but I just love it now.

When things start to get "sought after", that usually drives the price UP. But maybe not the case with MG because it has a small following... unless Brad Pitt or some Hollywood hunk rides a MG on the silver screen, then everyone will have to have one.

If it was me, I'd be tempted to buy the B1100 and keep the Sport.  After fixing up the B1100, sell it on to a deserving buyer.  The red Sport was one of those bike I could just stare at after getting off and trying to walk away.  I had the black factory bags on mine as the red was too much for my tastes and the black bags seemed to kinda disappear, or not stand out so much, YTMV.

Trade down, no way.  The Sport 1200 2V motor seemed to me to have a "rideability", read torque curve, that is almost unmatched in any bike I have ridden, including my 8V Stelvio.  Never found myself hunting for a gear as it seemed to naturally put me where it needed to be and had power on demand, whether riding slow in traffic or railing on sweepers and twisties.  The suspension also made the bike a big step up over the lower spec B1100. The only fears I had with the bike was the, uhm, "dash".  Yes I had one replaced under warranty and experienced the left turn signal that would come on by itself after riding in the rain on the replacement. And the over cooling when riding in Winter (mayo in oil) which I found a few times at oil changes.

I put 40,000 miles on it before trading to the Stelvio.  Yes, I miss it!

I saw this CL add last night and this morning checked the forum to see if it was a members bike. So it is, and decision made.  Nicely worded ad for an interesting motorcycle.  Very tempting, eh?

With all due respect, good luck on finding someone paying 7.5k for a1200 guzzi.
Not saying it doesn't worth it but finding a buyer is a whole different thing.

and i don't get why would u sell your bike for a breva, aren't they pretty similar?
