Leaking oil galley plug on 2012 Norge
« on: March 10, 2015, 07:58:37 PM »
Has anyone ever had oil seeping from the oil galley plug next to the exhaust flange stud? Not a major leak but I can smell burning oil once in a while and I'd like to fix it. I'm a bit leery on trying to remove it and also not sure what to coat the threads with when I screw it back in. Fairly certain this is the source of the leak, I have checked the banjo bolt for the oil line on the inner side of the head. This is my 1st time posting a photo so hopefully it works.

You have a link to the web page, marked as an image.
I found the page that you added and went there. Got the properties of the picture, and posted the picture only, as an image.

On the leak, I wonder if there is a 'sealing' Loctite that you can put on the screw threads?

My 13 Stevio had the same leak, dealer said the sealant used by the factory had cracked and caused the leak, they resealed it and it lasted a week before seeping again. After looking at it closer they determined that the plug had been cross threaded by the factory and said the only way to get it to seal permanently would be to JB weld it into place because Guzzi would never approve a  replacement  cyclinder for such a small leak. I said go ahead and its been dry since. ( over 8k miles) According to the dealer the plug is used for assembly at the factory so making permanent will not be a problem.

Seems like whatever I put on there would have to be good for high temperature.

Go to a bearing house and they will hook you up w/Loctite product, that's better than doing it twice.

OR

JB Weld it up

Loctite makes a thread sealant good up to 400F. Think that would do it?

Doubt it, exhaust gases are a wee bit hotter than that!

Incidentally I think the statement that warranty wouldn't cover it is flawed. I have replaced two heads with minor casting flaws which wept barely perceptively but enough to be annoying. Warranty was approved overnight and the heads, complete with valves, springs etc. arrived in about two weeks from Italy.

I'd try JB Weld meself.

+1 on the warranty, the only request I've had denied was the batteries on the Stelvio.  Italy stands fast on them being the proper battery for that application.  other than that typically no questions asked.
