What is this bolt for on my 2013 Stone?
« on: March 14, 2015, 06:20:49 PM »
What is this bolt for? Should I ever be concerned with it? What if I poured some 85W-140 gear oil into it thinking I was low on rear hub oil? Did I do the right thing or should I take the wheel off and drain it before riding the bike?  ???

That's the vent. It's how you add the gear oil, but you don't want to overfill it, so pull the level plug (horizontal plug on rear) with the bike/rear both cold and level, then let it drain/level out.

Thanks. I had read the manual before checking it but then started second guessing myself afterwards. Sometimes I can make things more complicated than they really are. :-[

 Never read the manual?

It's the drain plug for the final drive.

Take it out and hold the bike upside down to drain it.  Hold the bike at a slight angle so as not to drip on the saddle.

Careful Jim! David's mate Mr. Nevada will read that and act on it!

It is the drain, but only for those living in Oz or NZ, where you don't have to hold the bike upside down to drain the oil.

Will a wheelie or two down the street work or does the bike have to be absolutely upside down?

Ah, well, I thought it was low because I was looking in the vent (the bolt on top). After I added some oil, I thought to myself, this doesn't seem right, so I went back and read the manual again and had pretty much figured out I was doing it wrong but thought I'd ask here just to be sure.  The manual has a really big arrow pointing to the bolt I should have checked. :-[

I drained out the excess this morning, which looked a lot like the amount I put in, so I don't think it was ever low. Afterwards, I took it out for a nice long ride and everything's fine. However, next weekend I need to change that plastic fuel filter. If I'm lucky, I won't put the tank back on backwards.  ::)

Up here in the hoary New England area where we can't ride for a few months every winter, we have lots of time on our hands so we can read the manual.  I envy those folks don't read the manual because they're too busy riding.

Yeah, I do consider myself lucky as the winters here aren't all that bad. Even so, with spring just around the corner, apparently skimming the manual is the most I'm capable of when all I can think of is this:
