Crash Bars Needed
« on: March 29, 2015, 09:13:29 PM »
Oops! Too late!

I was moving my Norge in my driveway this afternoon, in preparation for washing it. I thought the kickstand was down, but I was wrong. I am strong for my age, but not strong enough.

Good thing I have insurance, because I am making a claim tomorrow!

PS: I haven't dropped a bike in 20 some years, so I guess it was time...

My sympathies...
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

My sympathies...

Indeed.

So, unless it's too painful to recite, how much carnage did you do.

If it helps, many of us have BTDT. I actually got off cheaply -- as in virtually zero damage -- in this instance, but only the dumb luck of a grassy creek drop, not skill or strength, made that so.

You can see where, while at a stop on the "shoulder," the front wheel went sideways and the laws of physics took over.   :'(

Thanks for the kind words. I can't believe I did this, but such is life. If it hadn't been this mistake, it would have been another mistake!

Damage is limited to the left side. Nothing serious (but probably expensive!). The left pannier took the brunt of it, with a very visible black scrape on the white paint. The bar end, mirror, and turn signal cover have a few scrapes, and the fairing has a few hardly visible scratches. Since I pay more than $5,000 each year for auto and motorcycle insurance, I will have my insurance company replace everything that was scratched. They owe it to me.

I am really not sold on crash bars, unless you get the sets the police bikes have on them.

I had my T5 for a little over a month when I dropped it.  Crash bar and everything.  There was this big rock...which ended up right where the tank was.  Big dent.  The crash bars did protect the plug and plug cap  :)

My old, old CB500-4 had BIG crash bars on it.  It could be dropped over and over without hurting anything.

UPDATE: Safeco agrees with me in part. They agree that they need to pay for replacements parts once I have paid my deductible. They don't agree with me that my $250 comprehensive deductible should apply. They feel that my $500 "collision" deductible should apply. (I suppose there was a collision, with the ground.)

I'll talk with my dealer and then decide what to do. If I can replace the side case cover for significantly less than $500, I will probably do just that and call it good enough. However, if I cannot, then I will pay the $500, replace everything, and stick Safeco with the balance.

Either way, I'm shopping around for new auto insurance. I may not be able to do anything about the comprehensive vs. collision deductible issue, but I can probably find comparable coverage for less than $5,000+ per year...

saved my EV from any body and paint when I went down on the EX.  Lost a mirror and one crash bar from it.   My big toe was sore for 6 months.   :(

Jeff,

I hate to tell you but the panniers can only be purchased in sets and they are about $1,000.  My suspicion is that you will be working with Safeco.  Good luck!

Since I pay more than $5,000 each year for auto and motorcycle insurance,
your either getting totally screwed or you have a barn full of cars and bikes.. try Dairyland and Progressive.. I was really happy with the payout from Dairyland on a Bassa, got way more than I bought it for! and about $2300 for my riding gear. I think I was paying about $350 for full coverage on 2 bikes.
Progressive is a good company and didn't try to screw me on another claim..

Dang!  If I were paying that, I'd feel "owed" too!

Just paid my 6 month bill for 3 cars, 1 full coverage, 2 liability = $630 or $1260 annually

Annual bill for 3 antique motorcycles, full coverage = $120

Annual bill for 2 Guzzis and a Norton - $440.

That's $1820 a year for 8 vehicles.    Check GEICO for modern bikes, State Farm for modern cars, and JC Taylor for antique bikes ... you're bound to be able to do better than 5 large!

Norge Saddlebags on ebay right now, $275.00 each. That's the route I'd take and paint to match if needed.

can't the bags be repaired and painted ?

luckily I've got black HB.  They have a few scuffs but you I understand you can spray 'em with pickup bed liner.

I'll swing by my dealer this week and see what he has to say. I'll also look into eBay and the possibility of repairing and reprinting the left pannier. Frankly, if I could do that last option fairly cheaply, I'd probably be okay with not fixing the other relatively minor blemishes. (I should have gone black instead of cop white, though I do love how cagers pull over for me and get out of my way!)

And yes, I think we are paying too much to insure two cars, a pickup truck, a Vespa, and two motorcycles. I am definitely going to shop around.
