Hello Folks, I just wanted to let you all know, I have gone back, and read all the responses here many times over and over again. I get alot of "strength" and reassurance from this.
When re reading John R's post from New Zealand :

In my case I knew going in that the operation I was going to have has a 6% mortality rate. That doesn't sound to bad, but consider, if a lottery gave you a 6% chance of winning you would surely buy a ticket.

During the op I had one of those Out Of Body experiences you hear about. I think it occurred when my heart was stopped. ( they cool it until it stops beating) In that state I had a close look at what the surgeon was doing to my leg (extracting arteries for the bypasses that were part of the deal) then decided that the surgeons would do what they would do and I would survive or I would not, so I might as well buzz off and do some other stuff. There the memory of the experience leaves me.

A couple of things about that were noticeable.

First off the actual experience of the OOB state was proof positive to me of our continued existence without a body. (It's only proof to me of course. A personal experience like that does not hold up under the scientific method, it remains anecdotal) I found this very reassuring.

I was struck by the "whatever happens, happens" attitude that I had in that state. I wasn't worried at all.

In all it gave a sense of proportion to the whole deal.

I'm not sure that I'm finding the right words to express what I'm trying to say here.

It amounts I suppose to what others have been saying all along. Be Positive. Attack the problem with all that you can bring to it, but learn to relax and dispense with fear.

John R's account is reassuring, and comforting, Its good to know that "we are not alone" in this journey. Its all a part of Gods plan.

I have my appointment with the radiation Oncologist this Friday afternoon, he will make the final recommendation regarding my treatment plan, then I think things will start happening very fast. I am trying to come up with a list of questions to ask him, and have been very busy around the house catching up with maintenance things , I want to leave in good shape for my family, before I undergo treatment. Ive been fixing a roof/chimney flashing job to take care of a leak, servicing the evaporative cooler, repairing leaky faucets, at home,  oil change, valve cover gasket, and new tires on my wifes 99 Camry, which is our "go to car", etc. etc. It does me good to stay busy, keeps my mind from being occupied by worry, and fear, which at least temporarily takes away that "someone punched me in the stomach", hollow feeling in my gut.
I will let you all know what the radiation guy tells me.....
Thanks to all here that are praying for me, and sending good wishes, and good Karma, my way. I can never thank you enough!
Love, and Hugs,
Rick.

I also will take to prayer. It has helped me through several trying times. Don't look at this as punishment or why this is happening to you. Complete waste of energy. Focus on letting your family be there with you. A family is a unit and you have to be able lean on them too. It is good for them and makes them feel useful and helps their optimism in this whole thing. I believe there is a God and I will also pray if you don't already know him you will at least look into it.

Rick,
My wife kept the port almost a year after chemo, as a "Victory Mark". It made the chemo injections much easier. Now she has a pink ribbon tattoo on same place.
I cannot remember how many times I drove her to Fox Chase in Philly to get chemo and radiation for the triple negative breast cancer.
She survived and we just celebrated the 5 years anniversary of that day.

It will be a rough time for the family and you, but the family is there to support you. So are we.

It will be "one day at time" battle.
Every day is a good day.
Every day is a small victory.

Hang in there and I will be praying for you and your family,
Lauri

Rick,
Travel is a very underated embuggerence in your up comming Odyssey.
Depending on your treatment regime, especially if you have 6 weeks of radiation it is quite taxing, and it just gets harder not to mention expensive as the treatment progresses,do some preplanning to minimise the impact on you and your family, it gets to them as well. Remember the 5 Ps Prior Planning Prevents P*££poor Performance.
Stomach pict for feeding, go with it, its better than a tube up your nose and irritating your throat further, not fun when you throwup and the tube comes with it, plus its a complete bastard to get another tube inserted.
The less condition you loose the better, I was loosing over 2.5 lb a day mostly muscle, took a fair while to get that back, better off not loosing it in the first place.
I'm still wondering what the fat in love handles is actually for, as my body was eating itself these bloody things stayed as they were, 8 th wonder of the world perhaps.
Pain, everyone is different, my throat looked extremely painful but luckily wasnt, I had very little pain, as always YMMV, follow their advice and if you have pain stay on top of it and take the meds, dont try and tought it out its tiring and taxing.
Look out for crashing blood pressure, it can catch you out usually after getting up out of a chair. Not much else I can add goodluck.

Hello, Folks! I havent been on here for a while, but I wanted to give all of you an update, I completed my first week of chemo, and radiation yesterday. I have been up in Tucson for that, but have returned to my home in Douglas, for the weekend/ mothers day. I will be back up in Tucson for the second week of treatments Sunday evening. I just wanted to let all my friends here know, that I am doing ok, 3rd day after chemo, I was down for the count, spent most of that day stretched out on the recliner, sleeping on and off.
It feels good to go back to my garage, and  dust off the Guzzis. I actually plan to take my sidecar rig out for a little ride today, as my wife could probably benefit from that ride, as well. Its been a bit of a tough week for her, holding my hand during chemo, and basically doing everything, including most of the driving in that crazy Tucson traffic.
Its nice to be back in"the sticks", where the pace is much slower.
I will try to post a couple of pics, sometime this weekend,
Warmest regards, and love to all !
Rick.

Rick, did they actually do surgery on you? I get the chemo part and wish you the best. Before I had the brain shunt installed on Feb 4,this year I had decided not to do it because it was only marginally successful.  When a good friend heard of my decision he convinced me to do it because there was a chance that I would be able to ride again.I am now riding again and glad I endured the surgery.

Rick,

You have been on my mind.  Every day I pray for you.  Every time I get on a bike, you get one of those blue flaming healing shafts fired from Sugar Land , TX to Arizona.  And they heal, and give strength and faith.    Did a Triumph twist of the throttle in your honor today....

So glad to hear from you, Rick.  It's funny -- while I was out tonight, I got to thinking that I hadn't seen any updates lately, and planned to check this thread when I got home.  Well, as soon as I got into WG, there was the thread!  Thanks for saving me the effort!!  Hope you enjoyed the ride.

I hope that this will be behind you soon and you will be able to enjoy the ride for decades to come.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier.  Glad to hear you have one week down.  I'm glad your treatment schedule is measured I'm weeks, mine (had a different kind of cancer) was measured in months....

I know everyone reacts differently to treatment, but if you react similar to me it may have a stacking effect.  Be ready for it.

I know it's not all cupcakes and rainbows, you have a very good support structure already, your family and the good people here.  If you don't talk to us be sure to talk to them.   Don't make one of the many mistakes I made.

Oh on a side note, if you have a particular you meal or food you really like, you may want to have it.  Radiation for me destroyed my taste and then when my taste came back everything taste different.  If I would have known I would have ate so much sour cream and onion chips......

I just noticed this Rick. (I just haven't spent much time on the board of late.) Just wanted to say you're in my thoughts as well. Keep fighting and don't give up. I too am 57, and I reflect on that in a sort of somber way. I have now outlived my dad, who battled the big C, although that was 30+ years ago now. Lots of advances since then! My very best wishes for you getting ahead of this.

Hello Folks, I just wanted to post an update here. I just got back home to Douglas, 3rd week of radiation completed, next week,Tuesday, right after Memorial Day, I get the second round of chemo, and continue with the daily radiation treatments, for week 4 out of 8 total. I am feeling pretty decent, very tired, and like others said, I cant taste anything, not even a lemon! , have throat pain, but bearable. Im planning to dust off the Guzzis again, as its been very windy, and dusty here in this little border town. I have been "jonesing" for a ride on my loop, so I may take it for a spin, maybe get  my son to accompany me on the Cal II ,or one of his bikes. Gearman, I did not have any surgery, other than a biopsy of my parotid gland, where they found the squamous cell CA. The Docs say, the treatment is chemo/radiation. Im happy with that, I dont know if I could take them removing my tongue, or any other "parts" in that vicinity. When discussing options, that was one of my questions, to which my radiation oncologist described the area as "prime real estate" and thats why surgery is not normally indicated. Thanks very much to all you fine folks, for the prayers , and good wishes!
Warmest regards,
Rick.

Best wishes.  My doctor just told me last week that I had an aortic aneurysm and it had grown from 3.2cm to 4.6cm in the last 3 years.  Freaked out and then the Psych calmed me down.  Now CAT scan next week, but Doc says not to worry about it.
