Lemans 1000 not advancing
« on: April 02, 2015, 08:47:38 PM »
Lemans 1000,

distributor not advancing timing by any more than around 6 degrees, checked by strobe.

(I'm certain it was advancing a few weeks ago, but I have since been in the distributor trying to remedy points arcing and a weak spark, which have been solved...)

next steps?

thanks, as ever

Are your springs so weak that you are setting a false static timing that is at a point only degrees from the stop. Grabbing ahold of the breaker cam and twisting it should give you an idea of what is happening.

Did you loosen the screw on top of the shaft & add a drop of oil?

I replaced the springs about 3 years ago, I would've thought they'd still be good...

The springs overcome the friction to return the advance weights to their 'retarded' position. The oil is the miracle worker that sees to it that it happens.

Can you share what your fix was with the weak spark. It could be helpful for someone down the road.
Thanks

If the advance weights are binding due to dirt or rust this will happen.

When oiling the advance weight pivot, it only takes a drop or two.  Too much and the oil can fling out and foul the points.  BTDT.

Might want to use a timing wheel on the front of the crank to determine what range of advance you're getting.
